The difference between those probabilities is important. The first market only requires Donald to appear in a game at some point during the season, leaving open the possibility of a delayed or late-season return. The second requires him to officially sign before Week 1. Either way, the market has shifted dramatically toward seeing No. 99 back on an NFL field.

Aaron Donald To Play An NFL Game This Season - 88.2% Chance
Donald retired following the 2023 season after 10 years entirely with the Rams. Even in his final campaign, he remained one of the league's elite defenders, recording eight sacks and 53 tackles while earning his eighth First-Team All-Pro selection and 10th consecutive Pro Bowl honor. He finished his career with 111 sacks, 24 forced fumbles and three Defensive Player of the Year awards.
For most of the past two years, Donald appeared comfortable with retirement. The situation changed after Los Angeles acquired reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett this offseason. Sean McVay initially contacted Donald to discuss Garrett's fit with the defense, and that conversation helped spark Donald's interest in potentially returning himself.
The comeback speculation became considerably more concrete last week. Donald completed an official workout with the Rams on August 4, wearing a helmet and going through defensive line drills, sled work and other football movements. McVay said Donald looked outstanding and indicated that the process continues to move in the right direction, although no final decision has been announced.
This was more meaningful than an informal workout between former teammates. Donald's participation appeared on the NFL transaction wire because he used team equipment during the session, and he remains on the league's retired list until formally applying for reinstatement. Garrett has also said Donald has seriously considered returning, creating increasingly strong evidence that this is more than offseason speculation.
Aaron Donald To Sign Before The Regular Season - 71% Chance
The 71% market is more conservative because Donald does not necessarily need to make his decision before Week 1. At 35 years old and after two full seasons away, he has been deliberately testing how his body responds to football-specific preparation before committing to another season. McVay has emphasized that Donald will only return if he believes he can prepare and perform at his normal standard.
That creates a realistic scenario in which Donald continues training independently and waits before officially returning. Los Angeles does not desperately need him in September. The Rams are already +550 Super Bowl favorites and have constructed a defensive front featuring Garrett, Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske. Donald could theoretically join later in the season, reduce the physical burden of a full 17-game schedule and still be completely integrated before a playoff run.
The motivation is also substantially different from when Donald retired. He already owns a Super Bowl championship, but returning to play beside Garrett would create one of the most decorated defensive line combinations in NFL history. Garrett is coming off a 23-sack Defensive Player of the Year season, while Donald is one of only three players ever to win that award three times.
Aaron Donald Return Betting Outlook
The movement toward 88.2% to play this season is difficult to dismiss after Donald progressed from considering a comeback to completing an official Rams workout. The larger question is timing, which explains why the probability of signing before the regular season remains considerably lower at 71%.
Everything currently points toward Los Angeles if Donald decides to play. The Rams have championship expectations, McVay remains his coach and the chance to line up alongside Garrett provides a unique reason to return after two years away. The market has moved aggressively, but the recent workout and increasingly public preparation make a Donald comeback look far more realistic than it did entering the summer.
