The Los Angeles Rams have shortened from +550 to +500 to win Super Bowl LXI after Aaron Donald officially ended his two-year retirement and rejoined the franchise. The move itself was relatively small because Donald had been ramping up throughout August and a return was increasingly expected, but Los Angeles now enters the season with arguably the NFL's most loaded roster and a troubling historical trend attached to its price.

Aaron Donald returns to a defense that was already stacked. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year joins Myles Garrett, Braden Fiske, Kobie Turner and Byron Young up front, while Los Angeles also strengthened the secondary with Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.
At 35 and coming off two seasons away, Donald does not need to be the same player who dominated the NFL for a decade. Even 75% of his old level would create major problems when opposing offenses are already building protection plans around Garrett.

The offense gives the Rams just as much upside. Matthew Stafford remains in control of Sean McVay's system with Puka Nacua, Davante Adams and Kyren Williams around him, giving Los Angeles one of the strongest veteran skill-position groups in the NFC.
Los Angeles was already painfully close last season. The Rams reached the NFC Championship Game and lost 31-27 to Seattle, reaching the Seahawks' 6-yard line with a chance to take the lead late. They were essentially one successful drive away from playing for another championship.
The path back will not be easy. Los Angeles opens against San Francisco in Melbourne and also faces Denver, Philadelphia and Buffalo during the first five weeks. The NFC West remains demanding as well, with defending champion Seattle and the 49ers both capable of making the division race difficult.
The +500 price also puts the Rams into some strange historical company. Over the last 30 years, 20 teams have entered the preseason at +500 or shorter to win the Super Bowl, and none went on to win it. Los Angeles now has an opportunity to become the first team in three decades to break that trend.
That history is more warning than disqualifier. Stafford is 38, Donald is returning after two years away and an older roster always carries durability concerns, but few teams can match this combination of quarterback play, offensive weapons, coaching and defensive star power.
The move from +550 to +500 may look small, but the roster change is anything but. The Rams were four points from the Super Bowl last season and have now added another future Hall of Famer to an already championship-caliber defense. If the veterans stay healthy, Los Angeles has every piece needed to snap both its recent playoff heartbreak and the ugly +500 preseason favorite trend.
