5 minPGA Power Rankings: Top 5 Golfers for The American Express
The PGA Tour heads back to the mainland United States this week for the 65th edition of The American Express, as many of the Tour’s best tee it up for the very first time this year. In what is the third official event of the 2024 PGA Tour season, FedExCup points will be available for the first time.
While world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the heavy favorite (+550), he’ll have plenty of competition making their debut this season including Patrick Cantlay (+1000), Xander Schauffle (+1200), Justin Thomas (+2200), and others. Let’s take a closer look at how things might play out this week in Southern California.

Pete Dye Stadium Course, Nicklaus Tournament Course, and La Quinta Country Club - La Quinta, CA
Every season, this event is held over a combination of three courses, the Pete Dy Stadium Course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and the La Quinta Country Club each gets a round over the first three days. The top 65 remaining in the field will then play The Stadium Course on Sunday, with the cut being held on Saturday this week. Each with its own set of challenges, all three courses come in well below the Tour’s average, with the Stadium Course maxing out at 7,187 yards.
The American Express Rankings
1. Xander Schauffele (+1200) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds
Xander Schauffle will look to continue his momentum from here last year, finishing with a 62 on Sunday for a T3. Coming in with a T10 at the Sentry, expect him to strike while the Iron is hot.
2. Justin Thomas (+2200) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds
Justin Thomas has taken nearly nine years off from this tournament, finishing T7 in 2015. He closed out last season with three straight top 5s, and I expect another strong showing here.
3. Patrick Cantlay (+1000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds
Opening the season with a T12 two weeks ago, Patrick Cantlay owns the course record at the Stadium Course (61). I like for him to lean on that experience here.
4. Scottie Scheffler (+550) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds
He hasn’t been playing great as of late, but Scottie Scheffler is still one of the best in the world. Talent alone should get him in the top five in this field.
5. JT Poston (+3000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds
With seven top 10s in his previous 11 events, JT Poston also has two top 10s in this event with a T6 last year.
