2024 U.S. OPEN ODDS: BETTORS HAMMERING SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER AT PINEHURST
Following Scottie Scheffler's fifth win of the PGA Tour season at Muirfield Village on Sunday, it's no surprise that golf bettors are hammering the World No. 1 golfer to win the 2024 U.S. Open.
The third major of the season is located at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst Village, North Carolina this week. It's the first time Pinehurst No. 2 has been played since 2014, when Martin Kaymer's putting allowed him to cruise to an eight-stroke win over the field at 9-under-par.
A few restorative moves have been made since 2014, particularly replacing Bentgrass greens with Bermudagrass. The rough is mainly comprised of sand, native wire grass, and other local plants that will create challenging scrambles with errant misses off-the-tee and on approach. Not many water hazards abound, but Pinehurst No. 2 runs over 7,500 yards and is a par 70, with no par 5s after the 10th hole.
PGA handicapper Matt MacKay is back to offer the latest betting data for golfers in the outright winner betting market ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open.
U.S. OPEN ODDS
GOLFER | ODDS |
---|---|
Scottie Scheffler | +320 |
Rory McIlroy | +1000 |
Xander Schauffele | +1200 |
Collin Morikawa | +1400 |
Viktor Hovland | +1600 |
Bryson DeChambeau | +1800 |
Brooks Koepka | +2200 |
Ludvig Åberg | +2200 |
Jon Rahm | +2800 |
Tommy Fleetwood | +4000 |
Cameron Smith | +4500 |
Matt Fitzpatrick | +4500 |
Justin Thomas | +4500 |
Oddsmakers are bullish on Scheffler once again at Pinehurst No. 2 this week. He already added a second green jacket during his win at The Masters in April, while his whirlwind weekend at Valhalla still produced a top-ten finish during the PGA Championship. +320 odds is very short for a major, especially since Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele are available at +1100.
Schauffele's win at Valhalla was impressive, considering he'd been close to a major win several times throughout his career up until this season. He had a quiet outing at Muirfield during his first outing since the breakthrough win at Valhalla, but his consistency off-the-tee, on approach, and putting make him one of the most well-rounded players in this tournament.
McIlroy's hot streak came to an end at Muirfield, failing to take advantage of his powerful driver and missing numerous greens in regulation, forcing him to scramble out of thick rough. Collin Morikawa's ascent on Sunday is encouraging, as he's seeking his first outright win since the 2023 ZOZO Championship.
Viktor Hovland looked sharp in the first two rounds this past week as the defending champion at the Memorial Tournament, but an atrocious 5-over-par outing in Round 3 ruined any momentum previously generated. Bryson DeChambeau is another big favorite this week, as the power hitter nearly forced a playoff against Schauffele during the PGA Championship.
U.S. OPEN BETTING DATA
GOLFER | PERCENTAGE OF BETS |
---|---|
Scottie Scheffler | 17.7% |
Collin Morikawa | 10.91% |
Bryson DeChambeau | 8.94% |
Sepp Straka | 4.05% |
Matt Fitzpatrick | 3.54% |
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER (17.7%)
A whopping 17.7 percent of the betting handle thus far has been wagered on Scheffler. This comes despite being available at +320 odds, over three times shorter than McIlroy and Schauffele. When Scheffler's putter is in a rhythm, which has been the club that's kept him from winning even more events this year, then it becomes scary to fade the World No. 1.
COLLIN MORIKAWA (10.91%)
Morikawa's bounce-back from going 2-over-par on Friday at Muirfield has given bettors hope for a strong showing at Pinehurst this week. Morikawa has three consecutive top-five finishes, including a T4 at Valhalla and runner-up at Muirfield Village this past weekend.
Ranked inside the top-20 for strokes gained tee-to-green, off-the-tee, and around the green, the putter and approach shot inconsistencies are the only weaknesses that Morikawa possesses. +1400 is great value considering his current form, which explains why bettors are placing nearly 11 percent of wagers in the outright winner market on Morikawa this week.
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU (8.94%)
DeChambeau rounds out the third betting favorite, garnering close to nine percent of the betting handle in the outright winner market at Pinehurst No. 2.
DeChambeau won the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club with a final score of 6-under-par. He's also recorded a T6 finish at Augusta National and a solo runner-up finish at Valhalla. DeChambeau is fantastic off-the-tee, using his power to position himself for short approach shots, while the putting tends to be hot or cold.
18-1 is an enticing number though, especially with how DeChambeau has performed in both previous majors this season. It's why bettors are backing the LIV golfer to make a run and contend for the outright win at a lengthy track like Pinehurst this week.
