With roughly eight games left for the main contenders, the Art Ross Trophy race has tightened into one of the best finishes in hockey. Connor McDavid is the slim betting favorite at -120, but his lead is hardly secure. He sits on 125 points, with Nikita Kucherov at 121 and Nathan MacKinnon at 120, so this award is very much still live entering the final two weeks of the regular season.
What makes this race so fascinating is that each player has a different case. McDavid leads the league in total points and assists, Kucherov has been the hottest scorer of the bunch over the last month, and MacKinnon still owns the goal-scoring edge among the three. With so little margin separating them, one huge night or one cold stretch could swing the entire board.

McDavid still controls the race for now. He leads the NHL with 125 points and has piled up 43 goals and 82 assists, giving him the edge both in total production and in playmaking. Edmonton has also caught fire at the right time, winning four straight after Tuesday’s shutout of Seattle, and McDavid extended his goal streak to five games in that win. Over his last 10 games, he has produced 7 goals and 9 assists, which is strong enough to keep him narrowly in front even with the pressure mounting behind him.
The biggest thing working for McDavid is that he still has the cleanest path if he simply maintains form. He has already shown he can put up multi-point nights whenever needed, including back-to-back games recently with a goal and two assists. If Edmonton keeps winning and McDavid continues to lead the league in assists while staying near a goal per game pace, it is easy to see why the market still lists him first. But with only a four-point edge over Kucherov and a five-point edge over MacKinnon, there is no room for a slowdown.

Kucherov feels like the biggest threat because his closing run has been outrageous. He sits at 121 points and has been piling up production at a rate that few players in the modern game can match. Over his last 10 games, he has posted 8 goals and 13 assists, and that kind of heater has helped erase what used to be a much larger gap in this race. Tampa Bay has surged with him, climbing to 46-21-6 and recently moving to the top of the Atlantic before its point streak was snapped in Montreal.
The case for Kucherov is simple: he looks like the player finishing the strongest. He has been setting the pace offensively for weeks, and if he keeps stringing together multi-point games while McDavid cools at all, this could flip quickly. He has already won the Art Ross before, and this version of Kucherov looks every bit capable of doing it again. The market still has him behind McDavid, but if you are looking for the skater with the strongest late momentum, it is very hard not to land here.

MacKinnon is still right in the middle of this fight at 120 points, just one behind Kucherov and five off McDavid. He also has one edge the other two do not: 49 goals, the best total among this trio and one of the top marks in the league. Colorado is 49-14-10 after blasting Calgary 9-2, and MacKinnon was central again with a goal and two assists in that game. Over his last 10 games, he has recorded 6 goals and 10 assists, which keeps him firmly within striking distance.
MacKinnon’s path is probably the hardest simply because he starts from third, but it is far from unrealistic. If he keeps scoring at the rate he has recently and closes the gap with a couple of three-point nights, he can absolutely steal this. The goal edge matters because it gives him a different kind of finishing profile than McDavid or Kucherov. If the last two weeks turn into a sprint of star-level shot creation rather than pure assist piling, MacKinnon has the firepower to make this race chaotic in a hurry.
