The Vezina Trophy race has tightened into another true two-man battle. Ilya Sorokin is the slight favorite at -120, but Andrei Vasilevskiy is right behind at +110, and with only a handful of starts left for each goalie, this award is far from settled. Sorokin has held the edge for much of the late season thanks to elite shot-stopping and a league-leading shutout total, but Vasilevskiy’s recent surge has made this nearly a coin flip.
What makes the debate so interesting is that both have strong but different cases. Sorokin has been the statistical anchor for the Islanders and leads the NHL with seven shutouts while also sitting atop the league in save percentage among goalies with at least 40 games played. Vasilevskiy, meanwhile, has backstopped a red-hot Tampa Bay team, ranking second in goals-against average at 2.32 while helping the Lightning charge up the Atlantic standings.

Sorokin’s case begins with pure goaltending value. He leads the league in shutouts with seven, has a .914 save percentage among qualified goalies, and ranks among the league leaders in wins with 28. Even more impressive, after a shaky opening seven games, he has gone 26-16-1 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.40 goals-against average the rest of the way. That kind of sustained elite play is why he still sits narrowly on top of this market.
Sorokin has never won the Vezina, which adds another layer to his candidacy. He finished as a finalist before, but this season looks like his best chance yet to break through. The Islanders have stayed in the playoff race largely because of his consistency, and when a goalie leads the NHL in shutouts while also posting top-tier save efficiency, that is usually the kind of profile voters reward.

Vasilevskiy is closing hard, and that is why this race feels so live. He is one of the biggest reasons Tampa Bay has spent most of the season near the top of the Atlantic, ranking second in wins (29), second in goals-against average (2.32), and tied for fourth in save percentage (.913) among goalies with at least 25 games. His best stretch of the year came from Dec. 20 to Feb. 25, when he went 17-0-1 with a 1.90 GAA and .925 save percentage.
Vasilevskiy has won the Vezina before, taking the award in 2018-19, and his résumé gives him plenty of credibility if voters lean toward team success and late-season momentum. Tampa Bay had gone 6-0-2 over an eight-game stretch before Tuesday’s loss to Montreal, and that run helped the Lightning climb into the thick of the division race. If he finishes with a couple more statement wins while Sorokin cools at all, it would not take much for the market to flip.

Bobrovsky deserves a brief mention because he is still a decorated name and has won this award twice already. But this is not his year. His current line sits at 26-20 with a 3.02 GAA and .878 save percentage in 48 appearances, which is well behind the two leaders statistically.
Florida has had strong goaltending moments from Bobrovsky, including multiple shutouts this season, but the overall body of work is not close enough to put him seriously into this race with so little time left. This one is almost certainly coming down to Sorokin or Vasilevskiy.
