Who Will Get Promoted to Premier League in EFL Championship Playoffs?

Coventry and Ipswich have already booked their places in the Premier League, leaving Southampton, Middlesbrough, Millwall, and Hull to fight for the final promotion spot through the Championship playoffs. Southampton enter as the slight favorite at +200, followed by Middlesbrough at +225, Millwall at +250, and Hull at +600.

The Saints are the form team in the field after a remarkable second-half surge, going unbeaten in their final 19 league matches with 14 wins and five draws after sitting 15th in January. Now they open the semifinal away at Middlesbrough on Saturday, while Millwall and Hull begin the other tie Friday before the return legs next week and the Wembley final shortly after.

Championship Promotion Odds Breakdown

Southampton Promotion Odds: +200 Check out the best odds on Caesars Sportsbook

Southampton are favored because their season has turned from frustration into momentum at exactly the right time. The Saints were beaten by Hull on January 17, then did not lose another Championship match the rest of the way, riding a 19-match unbeaten league run into the playoff picture and battling up toward the top of the table. That kind of form matters in a playoff format where confidence, rhythm, and late-season cohesion often matter as much as raw quality.

Southampton were most recently in the Premier League in 2024-25, so this would be an immediate return rather than a long-awaited comeback, but the pressure is still heavy for a club built to bounce back quickly. Cyle Larin has been an important late-season attacking piece, scoring nine goals in 20 appearances since joining on loan from Mallorca, including six in his last eight Championship matches.

Middlesbrough Promotion Odds: +225 Check out the best odds on Caesars Sportsbook

Middlesbrough are right behind Southampton in the market and get the first leg at home, which gives them a chance to put the favorite under pressure immediately. Boro finished level with Southampton on 80 points and have recent matchup confidence, including a 4-0 home win over the Saints in January. Morgan Whittaker is one of the key attacking names in this tie after finishing as the top scorer on either side with 14 Championship goals, including two in that January win. Middlesbrough have been out of the Premier League since 2016-17, so promotion would end a long stay outside the top flight. The first leg also arrives with extra edge after the buildup included an alleged Southampton analyst spying incident at Middlesbrough training, giving this semifinal a sharper rivalry feel before the ball is even kicked.

Millwall Promotion Odds: +250 Check out the best odds on Caesars Sportsbook

Millwall are the third choice at +250 and may be the most intriguing blend of form, grit, and opportunity. The Lions finished third, narrowly missing automatic promotion after Ipswich’s final-day win secured second place, and now they get Hull in a semifinal where they will feel they have the stronger overall body of work.

Millwall have never played in the Premier League era, with their last top-flight season coming in 1989-90, so this playoff run carries historic weight. Their key attacking names include Femi Azeez, Mihailo Ivanovic, Josh Coburn, Oliver McBurnie, and Joe Gelhardt, giving them enough forward options to make this more than just a defensive story. The price is fair because Millwall are closer to Southampton and Middlesbrough than the odds gap may suggest, but they still need to handle the emotional weight of being this close to a first Premier League promotion.

Hull Promotion Odds: +600 Check out the best odds on Caesars Sportsbook

Hull are the longshot at +600, but they have already beaten the odds just by getting here. The Tigers clinched the final playoff spot on the last day with a 2-1 win over Norwich, edging out Wrexham and Derby in the process. Hull last played in the Premier League in 2016-17, and this would be a dramatic return after a season in which they massively outperformed expectations.

Their profile is volatile, with underlying numbers suggesting they overachieved, but that can also make them dangerous in a short playoff format. Kyle Joseph is one of the key names after previously scoring twice against Millwall, while manager Sergej Jakirovic has quickly taken a team from the fringes to within three matches of promotion. The market is skeptical, but a sixth-place team with momentum and nothing to lose is not an easy playoff opponent.

Championship Promotion Betting Outlook

Southampton deserve favorite status because their unbeaten run is the strongest form angle in the playoff field, and their squad looks dangerous at the right time. Middlesbrough are the most obvious threat because of home advantage in the first leg, recent success against Southampton, and a sharper attacking centerpiece in Whittaker. Millwall are close enough to be live at +250, especially if they control the Hull tie early, while Hull are the chaos price at +600.

The lean is Southampton at +200, but this is not a runaway market. Their form is excellent, yet Middlesbrough are capable of making the semifinal uncomfortable immediately. If Southampton survive the Riverside with the tie level or better, their price may shorten quickly before the second leg.
