USA Starting Lineup for Round of 16 Battle with Belgium Amid Folarin Balogun Red Card Appeal

Folarin Balogun’s status for USA vs. Belgium has become one of the most dramatic Kalshi markets of the World Cup knockout rounds. After his red-card suspension was unexpectedly lifted Sunday, the market swung from almost no chance of him starting to near certainty, though Belgium’s late appeal keeps one final twist on the board.

Folarin Balogun Odds to Start: Will the Star Striker Suit Up on Monday Night Round of 16 Clash of USA vs. Belgium After Red Card Saga?

The United States faces Belgium on Monday night in the World Cup Round of 16, but the biggest pre-match storyline now centers on Balogun’s availability. The USMNT striker was originally expected to miss the match after a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, only for FIFA to suspend the automatic one-match ban and make him eligible to play.

That ruling completely flipped the Kalshi market. Balogun went from a 2% chance to start to 99% almost immediately after the decision, before settling around 94% as Belgium’s appeal window created one last layer of uncertainty.

USA vs Belgium Probable Lineups

USA (4-2-3-1): Freese; Freeman, Ream, Richards, Robinson; Adams, Tillman; Dest, McKennie, Pulisic; Balogun

Belgium (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Castagne, Mechele, Theate, De Cuyper; Tielemans, Vanaken; Doku, De Bruyne, Trossard; Lukaku

Folarin Balogun Odds To Start (94% Chance)

Balogun remains the overwhelming favorite to start because the current ruling makes him eligible, and there is little tactical reason for the USMNT to leave him out if he is available. He has been one of the team’s most important attackers throughout the tournament, and his ability to stretch the back line gives the United States a different threat than Ricardo Pepi.

The market dropping from 99% to 94% is not about lineup doubt. It is about legal and procedural risk. Belgium still has a chance to challenge the decision, and while the odds imply only a small chance of another reversal, the possibility is not completely gone.

If the ruling holds, Balogun should start. The USMNT has built much of its knockout attacking shape around his movement, direct running and finishing threat, and a Round of 16 match against Belgium is not the time to get cute with the striker role.

Belgium’s Appeal Risk

Belgium’s challenge is the only thing keeping this market from being effectively closed. The Belgian federation has criticized FIFA’s ruling and is pushing back on the idea that an automatic red-card suspension can be suspended this late in the tournament.

The chance of another reversal appears small, but the chaos of the last few days explains why Kalshi is not pricing Balogun at 99% anymore. A market that was once almost dead flipped instantly after Sunday’s ruling, so traders are leaving some room for another procedural shock.

This is also a competitive integrity issue for Belgium. From their perspective, the United States is getting its top striker back after what was originally expected to be a suspension. That makes the appeal more than a formality, even if the current odds still heavily favor Balogun being cleared.

Ricardo Pepi Odds To Start (4% Chance)

Pepi is the clear contingency option. He is now down around 4% to start after sitting near 79% before the Balogun ruling, showing how quickly the USMNT striker market changed once Balogun became eligible.

Pepi already filled in during the group stage when Christian Pulisic was unavailable, and he gives the United States a more traditional No. 9 profile. If Balogun is suspended again, Pepi would almost certainly become the most logical replacement at the top of the attack.

The issue is that Pepi’s path depends almost entirely on the appeal. This is not a normal lineup battle anymore. If Balogun is eligible, he starts. If the ban is reinstated, Pepi likely jumps right back into the role.

USMNT Lineup Market Outlook

This market is now mostly about whether FIFA’s Sunday ruling survives Belgium’s final challenge. If it does, Balogun should lead the line against Belgium, and the 94% price is justified.

The risk is small but not meaningless. Belgium has a real incentive to push the appeal, and the entire situation has already moved from suspension to clearance in shocking fashion. That keeps a narrow path open for another reversal.

Still, the most likely outcome is Balogun starting Monday night. The ruling made him eligible, the USMNT needs his attacking threat, and Pepi’s market has collapsed because his only real path is another disciplinary twist before kickoff.
