More than $276,000 has traded on the market, and Thursday brought another major development. Fernandez was left completely out of Chelsea's squad for its EFL Cup match against Luton at Stamford Bridge, despite manager Xabi Alonso saying only a day earlier that the midfielder was expected to feature.

Manchester City 80%
City has gone from an outside possibility to the overwhelming favorite in a matter of days. Reports Wednesday indicated Manchester City was preparing to make a late bid for Fernandez, with some reports putting the potential opening offer around £100 million.
Chelsea has maintained a valuation around £120 million for the 25-year-old. The Blues actually imposed an August 14 deadline for interested clubs to make an offer at that valuation, and when City allowed it to pass without bidding, the expectation was that Fernandez would stay at Stamford Bridge for the entire season.
That confidence has disappeared quickly.
City never completely abandoned its interest, and the club's midfield has undergone a major transformation over the final weeks of the window. Rodri has departed for Barcelona, Nico Gonzalez has moved to Newcastle and Bernardo Silva is also gone. City has spent heavily on Elliot Anderson and teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, but Fernandez would provide another proven Premier League midfielder capable of controlling possession while adding leadership and attacking production.
There is also the Enzo Maresca connection. Maresca worked closely with Fernandez during his time at Chelsea and is believed to be a major admirer of the Argentina international. Fernandez developed into a particularly productive midfielder under Maresca, and a reunion would give City a player already familiar with what its manager wants from the position.
Thursday's omission only adds fuel to the speculation. Fernandez had been expected to participate against Luton, making his complete absence from the matchday squad difficult to ignore while negotiations are reportedly progressing. It is not official confirmation of a transfer, but with only days remaining before the deadline, the timing could hardly be more notable.
Chelsea 21%
Chelsea retaining Fernandez was the clear favorite for much of August, particularly after City failed to meet the club's self-imposed deadline. The Blues have him under contract for several more years and have little financial incentive to accept anything significantly below their valuation.
Fernandez is also one of Chelsea's most important players. He has developed into a leader at Stamford Bridge and scored 10 Premier League goals last season while becoming increasingly influential further forward. Selling him after the season has already begun would create an enormous hole in Alonso's midfield.
The problem is that Chelsea appears to be preparing for the possibility.
The club has been linked with several potential midfield additions in recent weeks, including players who could help cover Fernandez's departure. Chelsea's stance has seemingly shifted from believing the window had effectively closed on a move to bracing for Manchester City to finally submit an offer.
That does not mean City automatically gets the deal done. A gap between a potential £100 million bid and Chelsea's £120 million valuation remains substantial, especially between two Premier League rivals whose relationship has already become strained following Maresca's move from Stamford Bridge to Manchester.
Still, the market no longer views Chelsea's negotiating position as enough to keep Fernandez in place. At 21%, staying has gone from the expected outcome to a significant underdog in less than two weeks.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich Below 1%
Any move outside England now looks extremely unlikely. Real Madrid had been linked with Fernandez earlier in the summer, but the Spanish club publicly distanced itself from a potential transfer and has never developed into a serious late-window destination.
Bayern Munich is similarly below 1%. There is little indication of an active pursuit capable of competing with City's current push, and the market has essentially reduced the situation to Manchester City versus Fernandez remaining at Chelsea.
Will Enzo Fernandez Join Manchester City?
The movement toward City has become difficult to dismiss. A player going from expected to feature in an EFL Cup match on Wednesday to completely absent from the squad Thursday is significant enough on its own. Add reports that City is preparing a major bid and the 80% prediction-market price becomes far easier to understand.
There are still obstacles. Chelsea does not need to sell, Fernandez remains tied to a long contract and City may need to get considerably closer to the £120 million valuation before the Blues agree to strengthen a domestic rival.
But the direction of travel has changed dramatically. City has cleared midfield space, Maresca wants Fernandez, reports of an imminent offer have intensified and Chelsea suddenly left one of its most important players out of a match he was expected to play.
With the window closing September 1, this has gone from a transfer rumor that appeared to be dying earlier in August to one of the biggest deadline-week stories in European soccer. The next City bid could determine whether Fernandez has already played his final game for Chelsea.
