4 Minute ReadDenmark vs. Portugal Odds: Is Cristiano Ronaldo Playing for Portugal After Dramatic Exit from Camp?
Portugal travels to Parken Stadium on Thursday looking to remain perfect in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League, but the buildup has been dominated by Ronaldo rather than the matchup itself.
The controversy began after Jorge Jesus left Ronaldo on the bench for Sunday's 2-1 victory over Norway. Ronaldo had been expected to feature at some stage, but Gonçalo Ramos started, scored and remained on the field as Portugal secured another victory. Ronaldo was ultimately an unused substitute and headed toward the dressing room after the match rather than joining his teammates in front of the traveling supporters.
Jesus later acknowledged that Ronaldo was unhappy with the situation while rejecting suggestions of a major personal feud. Ronaldo then trained separately from the group, and questions about his status intensified before Thursday's trip to Denmark.
The situation reached another level Wednesday when Jesus publicly said Ronaldo was not expected to start against Denmark, with Ramos again in position to lead the line. Ronaldo subsequently spoke with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before announcing that he had decided to leave the national team camp.
That decision settles his status for Thursday night. Cristiano Ronaldo will not play against Denmark. Portugal confirmed his departure and will continue the current international window without its longtime captain.
Ronaldo offered little explanation beyond saying that he would tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind his decision "in time."

Why Did Cristiano Ronaldo Leave Portugal Camp?
The disagreement appears to center on Ronaldo's changing role under Jesus.
Ronaldo started Portugal's 1-0 Nations League victory against Wales to open the window but was substituted after 67 minutes. He was then dropped from the starting lineup against Norway, marking a major change for a player who has spent nearly two decades as the automatic centerpiece of the national team.
Jesus said Ronaldo had been told he could enter against Norway but ultimately decided the game did not require the substitution. Ramos was playing well, had scored and gave the coach little reason to change the center-forward position.
Jesus accepted that Ronaldo would naturally be frustrated but repeatedly emphasized that lineup decisions belonged to the coach and that the same rules applied throughout the squad. He also denied that Ronaldo had refused to train.
Wednesday's press conference added another layer. Jesus again backed Ramos to start against Denmark and said Ronaldo could potentially be introduced later if the game called for him. Within hours, Ronaldo had left the camp entirely.
That sequence has turned what initially appeared to be a debate over playing time into a much larger question about Ronaldo's relationship with Portugal's new coaching staff.
Was Ronaldo's Match Against Wales His Last Portugal Appearance Ever?
For now, there is no definitive answer.
Ronaldo has not announced his international retirement, and leaving one national team camp does not automatically mean that his Portugal career is finished. However, the circumstances make the possibility much more realistic than it appeared even a week ago.
Ronaldo is 41 and had already said the 2026 World Cup would be his final World Cup. His international career continued into the new Nations League cycle, but Jesus has quickly demonstrated that Ronaldo's status no longer guarantees him a starting position or even minutes off the bench.
If Ronaldo does not return, the 1-0 victory over Wales would stand as his final appearance for Portugal. That would bring an unusually dramatic conclusion to an international career that began in 2003 and ultimately produced records for both appearances and goals in men's international soccer.
There is still room for the two sides to reconcile. Jesus has publicly rejected the idea that there is an irreparable feud, while Ronaldo stopped short of announcing his retirement in his departure statement. His promise to eventually explain his decision now becomes the next major development to watch.
Who Steps Up for Portugal Without Cristiano Ronaldo?
Gonçalo Ramos is first in line.
The AC Milan striker replaced Ronaldo in the starting lineup against Norway and responded by scoring in the 2-1 victory. Jesus specifically identified Ramos as the expected starter against Denmark before Ronaldo left camp, making him the clear choice to lead the attack Thursday.
João Félix has also emerged as an important part of Portugal's early Nations League success. Félix scored against both Wales and Norway, giving Portugal another consistent source of goals as Jesus begins reshaping the attack.
Rafael Leão could take on additional responsibility from the left, while Bernardo Silva and Portugal's collection of technically gifted midfielders give the team several ways to create chances without building everything around one central scorer.
Portugal's depth is one reason the +100 moneyline has held the visitors as favorites despite the Ronaldo drama. Ramos has already shown he can produce as the starting striker, Félix enters the Denmark match in form, and Leão gives Jesus another explosive attacking option.
Thursday's match may therefore become more significant than simply another Nations League fixture. It will offer an early look at how Portugal functions when Ronaldo is not merely resting or sitting on the bench, but completely removed from the squad.
