The PGA Championship was as tough as expected on day one, especially for the afternoon group where the wind picked up in California. There were solid opening rounds for Brooks Koepka, Xander Schauffele and Justin Rose, but it was Jason Day and Brendon Todd who top the leaderboard after Thursday’s action.
Jason Day hit a bogey-free round on his way to carding five-under-par, just one shot clear of the chasing pack. The Australian’s approach and tee-to-green stats stood out and made up for dropping shots around the green.
Jason Day was +5000 to be the PGA Championship first-round-leader before the start of play with Bet365, however, the former PGA Championship winner was as short as +4000 with other sports books.
Brendon Todd joined Day at the top of the leaderboard, largely due to a fantastic putting display in tricky conditions, the American was a massive +8000 to be the first-round-leader before the start of play. However, was as short as +7000 with other bookmakers.
World number one, Justin Thomas was among the most popular bets in the week leading up to the PGA Championship. Unfortunately for the betting public, a couple of double bogeys meant he finished the opening round one over.
Following his performance on the opening day of the PGA Championship, Brooks Koepka has been the most backed player in the field since the first group teed off this morning. Koepka has accounted for 9% of all bets placed since the tournament got underway. Xander Shauffele was a popular option pre-tournament and that support hasn’t stopped, he’s accounted for 8% of all bets in-play.
