Australian Open Odds & Betting Data: Bettors Favor Medvedev To Djokovic

Daniil Medvedev may be the underdog, with +100 (Click to bet) odds headed into his Australian Open final match against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic -110, but he’s the favorite of bettors.

In the last 24 hours, 59% of total bets have come in for Medvedev. That comes as a mild surprise. Novak Djokovic is the world number one and has won the Australian Open a record 8 times, including the last two. Djokovic is often called the best hard-court player in the world, having won 11 of his 17 majors at hard-court tournaments.

However, Daniil Medvedev is quickly garnering a similar reputation. Medvedev has yet to win his first major, but his best performances have come on the hard court. He was a finalist at the US Open in 2019 and a Semifinalist in 2020. Medvedev also defeated Dominic Thiem to win the 2020 ATP Finals on a hard court, a tournament where he also defeated Djokovic.

Medvedev is also in the best form of his career. He hasn’t lost since October 2020. That run includes three wins against Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman, two against Rafael Nadal, and one against Matteo Berrettini, Thiem, and Djokovic. Not many players have runs against top-10 players as strong as Medvedev’s current one.

2021 Men's Australian Open Breakdown

During the 2021 Australian Open, Djokovic has hardly had it easy. He’s dropped at least one set in all but two matchups so far. Only his first round and semifinal matches were straight-set victories.

Djokovic has the advantage in their career head to head at four wins to three. However, Medvedev has won three of their last four matchups. It’s worth noting Djokovic faced qualifier Aslan Karatsev in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Medvedev has dropped just two sets in the whole tournament. Both coming in his third-round match against Filip Krajinovic. Medvedev’s win against Krajinovic was the first five-set win of his career.

It’s clear that the Australian Open final is set to be an entertaining match, as two of the best players in the world go head to head. Still, it’s easy to see why bettors are heavy on Medvedev.
