Alaska Governor 2026

Alaska Governor Primary Odds: Who Will Advance in Tuesday's Primary?

Alaska voters head to the polls on Tuesday, August 18, for a wide-open gubernatorial primary featuring 17 candidates competing for four spots in November's general election. Former Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson leads the prediction market among the three candidates shown, but Alaska's unusual top-four format leaves multiple candidates with a realistic opportunity to advance.

Will Dave Bronson, Others Advance in Alaska Governor Primary Tonight?

Unlike a traditional partisan primary, every Alaska gubernatorial candidate appears on the same ballot regardless of party affiliation. Voters select one candidate, and the four highest finishers advance to a ranked-choice general election on November 3. That means these prediction-market probabilities are not mutually exclusive. Bronson, Treg Taylor and Bill Walker could theoretically all advance.

The market currently gives Bronson a 59% chance to advance, followed by Taylor at 27% and Walker at 19%, with more than $230,000 traded. The crowded field remains difficult to handicap because Republican support is divided among numerous candidates, while former state Sen. Tom Begich and former state Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins are among the Democratic contenders.

Dave Bronson (59%)

Bronson has emerged as the strongest prediction-market option of these three, rising four points to 59% as voting gets underway. The Republican served as mayor of Anchorage from 2021 through 2024, giving him considerably more statewide name recognition than many candidates in a 17-person field.

His campaign has leaned heavily on his experience running Alaska's largest city, with Bronson arguing that the difficult decisions he faced as mayor prepared him for the governor's office. He is campaigning around economic growth, infrastructure, housing, schools and protection of the Permanent Fund Dividend.

The complication is that name recognition has not always translated into overwhelming polling support. One spring survey released by Bronson's campaign showed him at 7% in the huge primary field, illustrating how fragmented this race has been. Bronson does not need anything close to a majority, however. He only needs to finish fourth or better, which makes his 59% advancement probability much more plausible than it would be in a winner-take-all primary.

Treg Taylor (27%)

Taylor sits second among the three displayed candidates at 27%, down slightly in the live market. The Republican served as Alaska attorney general under Gov. Mike Dunleavy and entered the race with a résumé built around his time in state government rather than elected office.

Taylor has also assembled meaningful financial support. He reported roughly $1 million in fundraising by late July, the second-largest total among the Republican candidates cited in recent campaign-finance reporting and considerably more than Bronson's reported $318,000. That gives Taylor organizational strength even if his statewide profile is not as developed as Bronson's.

The challenge is breaking through a crowded Republican field that also includes former state officials Adam Crum, Click Bishop and Shelley Hughes, along with conservative activist Bernadette Wilson. With only four advancement positions available, Taylor needs enough support to separate himself from several candidates appealing to similar voters.

Bill Walker (19%)

Walker is the most experienced candidate of the three, having already served as Alaska governor from 2014 to 2018. He won that election as an independent, withdrew from his reelection race late in the 2018 campaign and returned in 2022, when he finished third behind Mike Dunleavy and Democrat Les Gara.

He is again running as an independent, this time alongside former Revenue Commissioner Randy Hoffbeck. In theory, Alaska's open primary should provide an opportunity for a recognizable independent candidate because Walker does not have to win a separate party nomination before reaching November.

Still, the market currently gives him only a 19% chance to survive the primary. Walker's name recognition and previous gubernatorial experience give him a credible route into the top four, but the presence of prominent candidates from both parties makes even that threshold difficult in such a fragmented race.

Alaska Governor Primary Market Outlook

Bronson has clearly separated himself from Taylor and Walker in the prediction market, but a 59% probability is far from the overwhelming numbers seen in more conventional primary races. Alaska's format creates considerably more uncertainty because the objective Tuesday is simply to finish among the top four rather than win outright.

That also makes Taylor at 27% and Walker at 19% more competitive than the raw numbers may initially suggest. With 17 candidates dividing the vote and four tickets moving forward, relatively modest statewide support could be enough to reach November. Bronson currently has the strongest market position of these three, while Taylor and Walker enter election night needing to win what could be a very tight battle around the fourth-place cutoff.
