2022 Australian Open Odds: Does Rafael Nadal Provide Good Value With Novak Djokovic in Limbo?

2022 Australian Open Odds: Does Rafael Nadal Provide Good Value With Novak Djokovic in Limbo?
The Australian Open has been around for 117 years and I'm not sure we'll ever have a more controversial one than this one, in 2022. Novak Djokovic, the sport's biggest star, is having issues getting into the country due to his visa. It's been one of the biggest sports stories of the new year with COVID-19 and the vaccine discussion taking the front lines.
Still, even with the question of his ability to play in this grand slam event oddsmakers have him as the favorite. To his credit, he has one three straight years and nine times since 2008.
With his status up in the air can we find value elsewhere? Let's take a look at the odds

Daniil Medvedev (+200)
Daniil Medvedev is a star in the making. He won the US Open in 2021 and finished as the runner-up to Djokovic in this event just last year. He's currently the number two ranked player in the world and he has 13 career titles under his belt at just 25 years old. He's yet to win an Australian Open but especially if Djokovic is out, this may be his best opportunity to do it so far in his career.
Alexander Zverev (+440)
What about the 24-year-old German? He's the third-ranked player in the sport right now with 19 career titles under his belt. In last year's Australian Open, he was knocked out by the eventual champion, Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals in four sets. The year prior, he made it all the way to the semifinals before bowing out to Dominic Thiem. Is this the year he gets over the hump, finally?
Rafael Nadal (+1200)
Hold on. You're telling me I can get +1200 odds on someone who has won the event already in his career (albeit 13 years ago) and someone who has been in the quarterfinals the last two times he's played in the Australian Open? Sure, at 35-years-old he's not the same player he once was but still, he's the sixth-ranked tennis player in the game right now and has a grand slam win as recently as 2020. With 89 career titles under his belt, don't sleep on the veteran. I know Zverev and Medvedev are taking the sport by storm but at +1200 it may be worth a look on Nadal. He's made it to the finals in 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2019 it might be time for him to finally take one home.
