UCLA travels to Berkeley on Saturday night to face California at California Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 PM ET on ESPN, with the Bruins favored by 2.5 points despite entering their first game under Chesney.
Cal is also beginning a new coaching era with former Golden Bear player and longtime defensive assistant Tosh Lupoi taking over the program. Both teams attacked the transfer portal aggressively, but Cal has the advantage of returning Sagapolutele after he started all 13 games last season.

UCLA opens its season after finishing 3-9 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten play last year. The Bruins lost their final five games and closed with a 29-10 defeat against USC, ending a season in which offensive consistency remained a major issue despite the dual-threat production of Nico Iamaleava.
California went 7-6 overall and 4-4 in ACC play last season. The Golden Bears beat SMU 38-35 in their regular-season finale before losing 35-31 to Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl. Cal averaged 25.3 points and 357.6 yards per game, with the offense relying heavily on a passing attack that produced nearly 276 yards per contest.

UCLA vs. California Line Movement and Betting Splits
California originally opened around -1.5 before the market flipped completely, with UCLA now favored by 2.5. That four-point swing is the most important market development, while the total has remained around 53.5.
UCLA has 52% of spread bets and 57% of the money, so the current action leans toward the Bruins without becoming overwhelmingly one-sided. The more dramatic split is on the total, where the Over owns 80% of tickets but only 32% of the handle, while the Under has 68% of the money on just 20% of bets.

Cal has plenty of new pieces, but Sagapolutele gives the Golden Bears the most important kind of continuity. He completed 316 of 492 passes for 3,454 yards with 18 touchdowns last season and threw for at least 200 yards in all 13 games. That gives Lupoi and new offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville an experienced Power Four starter to build around rather than asking a transfer quarterback to learn everything at once.
The surrounding cast has also been upgraded through the portal. Chase Hendricks arrives after producing 1,037 receiving yards and seven touchdowns at Ohio, Ian Strong transfers in from Rutgers and Adam Mohammed adds another backfield option after rushing for 523 yards and five touchdowns at Washington.
UCLA has reasons for optimism too. Iamaleava returns after completing 64.4% of his passes for 1,928 yards and 13 touchdowns while leading the Bruins with 505 rushing yards last season. His mobility creates a particularly dangerous matchup against a Cal defense that surrendered 156.4 rushing yards per game and 4.7 yards per carry in 2025.
Chesney also brought in one of the largest portal classes in the country. UCLA has 45 incoming transfers, including former James Madison running back Wayne Knight, who produced 2,039 all-purpose yards and 1,373 rushing yards last season. The Bruins have much more offensive upside than their 3-9 record suggests.
The question is how quickly that collection of new pieces becomes a cohesive team. UCLA is installing a new staff while asking dozens of transfers to immediately occupy meaningful roles. Cal has its own new coaching staff, but having the same quarterback who already directed the offense through an entire Power Four season gives the Bears a valuable stabilizer.
Cal also made significant staff additions around Lupoi, with Somerville arriving from the NFL and Michael Hutchings taking over the defense after working with Minnesota. The Golden Bears are not simply returning a seven-win roster unchanged, but the combination of Sagapolutele and a strong portal receiving group gives them a legitimate chance to score with UCLA from the start.
The market has already made an aggressive adjustment. Cal went from a small home favorite to a 2.5-point underdog, essentially creating four points of additional value for anyone willing to back the Golden Bears. Current betting splits lean UCLA, but not strongly enough to make that entire move look justified by Saturday's action alone.

UCLA may ultimately be one of the more improved teams in the Big Ten, but opening on the road with 45 incoming transfers and a completely new coaching staff creates a difficult environment for immediate cohesion. Cal has turnover too, but Sagapolutele gives the Bears proven continuity at quarterback and an upgraded collection of skill players around him.
The shift from California -1.5 to +2.5 has also created a much more attractive entry point on the home team. UCLA deserves respect with Iamaleava and Knight, but Cal has enough passing-game stability and home-field advantage to keep this essentially a toss-up and make the points valuable.
