Bo Nickal vs. Jamie Pickett Breakdown
Bo Nickal (3-0)
Looking for a successful UFC debut this weekend is Colorado's Bo Nickal.
While only competing three times in Mixed Martial Arts, Bo Nickal has quite the resume when it comes to wrestling. The 27-year-old is a three-time Division-I National Champion at both 184 and 197 pounds at Penn. State. Nickal also secured the 2019 National Championship in Las Vegas as well as the 2019 U23 World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
Following a wildly successful wrestling career, Nickal made the transition to MMA in 2022. It took Nickal only 33 seconds to knock out John Noland in his professional debut, a knockout that earned him a spot on Dana White's Contender Series in the Summer of 2022. Nickal submitted Zachary Borrego in just 62 seconds, which garnered him one more bout on DWCS. Nickal would then dominate Donovan Beard, whom Nickal submitted in 52 seconds. Nickal will now make his proper Ultimate Fighting Championship debut at UFC 285.
With only Dana White's Contender Series bouts under his belt, Nickal doesn't have much to go off of when it comes to a statistical standpoint. However, with the two bouts under the UFC banner, Nickal's output was absurd. Nickal averages 23.68 takedowns per 15 minutes with a 3.68 significant strikes landed per minute mark with 100% striking defense. It was a masterclass for Nickal during his appearance on DWCS and dragging Pickett to deep waters on the mat seems to be the way to go if Nickal were to keep his record unblemished.
Jamie Pickett (13-8)
Looking for the biggest upset in UFC history is 'The Night Wolf' Jamie Pickett.
A fellow Dana White Contender Series alum, Pickett needed three attempts to earn his way into the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Pickett lost his first DWCS bout, where he was submitted by Charles Byrd. Pickett would pick up a pair of wins on the independent circuit, which earned him another shot on DWCS. However, Pickett would once again come up short, this time to Punahela Soriano via unanimous decision. 'The Night Wolf' would secure a win back on the indie scene before finally claiming victory on DWCS, where he knocked out Jhonovan Pati.
Pickett would finally find himself on the UFC roster, but it started rough as he'd drop his first two promotional outings. Pickett would seemingly right the ship with a pair of consecutive victories over Laureano Staropolo and Joseph Holmes. However, Pickett will be looking to halt another losing streak at UFC 285 as he heads into the bout on the back of back-to-back losses against Kyle Daukaus and most recently Denis Tiuliulin this past September.
If Pickett were to pull off what would be the biggest betting upset in UFC history, he'll have to show better takedown defense than he previously has and keep this one on the feet. While 65% takedown defense is pretty solid for the UFC's light heavyweight division, Pickett cannot be taken down once if he hopes to survive the onslaught that's Bo Nickal's ground and pound.
