MLB Picks Today: Our Expert's Kansas City Royals vs. Toronto Blue Jays Picks

Before the season, I had Alek Manoah’s starts circled on my calendar, not to back the young arm but to fade. His velocity was down in Spring Training, and Manoah got roughed up in his first start of the season. Will the Blue Jays’ ace turn it around on Wednesday night, or will Zack Greinke and the Royals get a much-needed win at home?

Kansas City Royals vs. Toronto Blue Jays Prediction

Toronto was a very popular preseason pick not only to win the AL East but the World Series as well. It’s been a slow start to the season for the Blue Jays, who have already lost to Kansas City in this series. With their ace on the mound, you’d expect their “A” lineup tonight. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hasn’t hit a home run this season, and besides Matt Chapman and Bo Bichette, this explosive offense has been relatively dormant.

Tonight the Blue Jays face a soft-throwing veteran in Zack Greinke, who surprisingly has the edge in this matchup. Toronto finds success offensively with the long ball and high exit velocity. Facing a soft throwing, Greinke should limit Toronto’s ability to produce that high exit velocity off the bat. In the other dugout, maybe all Kansas City’s young core needs to get going this season is a matchup with a struggling young arm. Manoah is vulnerable; I’m sure the Royals coaching staff has emphasized how realistic Kansas City’s chances of getting to Manoah really are. Tonight is when guys like Bobby Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez get going and start to produce.

Although the 39-year-old veteran has been around for years, this Toronto lineup hasn’t seen him much. Besides Brandon Belt (who doesn’t scare me) and Matt Chapman, no other Blue Jay has more than 13 at-bats against Greinke. Vladdy has only three hits in 12 attempts with two strikeouts in his career against the Royals starter. Expect the crafty veteran to outsmart this young Toronto lineup and outpitch a struggling Manoah.

The Royals are unsurprisingly only bringing in 20% of moneyline bets tonight, and even less on of the handle.  The public seems to think Alek Manoah bounces back against a poor Royals team on the road. Oddsmakers think differently. The Toronto (-210) opener on the moneyline now sits around (-185) at most places. With all the money pouring in on Toronto, you’d think the odds would move accordingly, right? This reverse line movement is a great sign for Royals backers, in what could be a nail-biter, back Kansas City on the spread to keep this game within a run.
