In 2022, Patrick Corbin was the worst starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. Corbin finished the season with a league-high 6.31 ERA and was pulled in the first inning numerous times. It’s been a similar start to 2023 for the Washington Nationals ace, who enters tonight’s matchup against the Los Angeles Angels with an 8.00 ERA. Will Corbin continue his meatball-throwing ways, or will we get a glimpse of 2018 Patrick Corbin tonight?

It couldn’t be much worse of a matchup for Corbin tonight, who faces the 5-4 Angels and their stacked top of the lineup. Not only will Corbin have to navigate pitching around Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, but the rest of the Angels lineup is also much improved from a season ago. Guys like Taylor Ward, Anthony Rendon, and red-hot Hunter Renfroe should all feast against Corbin’s mediocre slider and 92 mph fastball. Brandon Drury should be in the lineup for Los Angeles tonight as well.
Drury dominated LHP last season and must be chomping at the bit for some at-bats against one of baseball’s worst lefties. Even the bottom of the Angels’ lineup has improved since 2022; Gio Urshela and Luis Rengifo are not easy outs. From top to bottom, this Angels lineup will have no problem getting runners on base against the Nationals tonight.
As a Nationals fan, I had nightmares last night watching Shohei take Corbin deep on repeat. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Mike Trout, the greatest hitter of our generation, take Corbin 450 feet out to center, either. With the total moving from nine to ten and the odds on the Angels' moneyline only getting juicier, it looks like Patrick Corbin is, unfortunately, getting rocked tonight.
Although the Nats' offense looked solid in Denver this weekend, it’s more likely that we see runs from the Angels tonight. Suarez was roughed up in his first start of 2023 but has an ideal matchup against one of the worst offenses in baseball tonight. This is a perfect get-right spot for the young lefty.
Even if Patrick Corbin is able to miraculously overperform, the Nationals' bullpen has been atrocious in 2023. Even the Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan can’t seem to find his groove, and Carl Edwards Jr. is way past his prime. Nobody coming out of that Nationals bullpen will have an edge against this stacked Angels lineup tonight.
Considering LAA is up to (-250) on the moneyline, and home teams on the spread aren’t typically a great investment (with potentially no bottom of the ninth), the best way to fade Corbin and the Nationals tonight resides on the Angels team total.
