Yu Darvish has never lost to the Mets. In eight career games, Darvish is 5-0 with a 2.56 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. After beating the Braves the previous three nights, the public will be sprinting to the books to wager on Darvish and this star-studded Padres lineup.
New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres Prediction
Max Scherzer and the Mets have struggled at the start of the year. After adding even more pieces to an already stacked roster this offseason, the Mets are only .500 up to this point. Scherzer gave up three runs to the Marlins on Opening Day and another five to the Brewers last week. Four home runs have already been launched off the veteran ace this year. Is it time to sound the alarms on Scherzer? I personally don’t think so. He’s started slow the past few seasons and seems to hit his stride around his third or fourth start of the year. Tonight could be the night we get a vintage Scherzer start.
The Padres must be feeling good after their previous road trip in Atlanta. After dropping the first game of the series on a walk-off, San Diego locked in and defeated Atlanta the last three nights, including a 10-2 route on Sunday Night Baseball. The Pads had to fly out of Atlanta late last night to face a rested Scherzer who slept in his own bed and is only a short drive away from the ballpark. Even with Scherzer’s recent struggles and Darvish’s dominance over the Mets, I still give the edge to a rested Scherzer facing a lineup on Cloud 9 after defeating Atlanta three times.
Although the Mets haven't beaten Yu Darvish in his career, Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor both see Darvish very well. Marte carries a .412 batting average in 17 at-bats against the veteran. Lindor has four career RBIs in 16 career at-bats against Darvish, along with a .313 batting average. We know Darvish has historically struggled on the road, and with the Padres coming off a late flight after Sunday Night Baseball, I wouldn’t be surprised if they look asleep at the plate tonight against one of baseball’s best.

Considering Darvish’s career dominance against the Mets, San Diego’s recent success, and Scherzer’s early season struggle, you’d expect San Diego to be the favorite tonight, even if they are playing on the road. Oddsmakers aren’t budging, setting Scherzer and the Mets as a (-140) favorite. Although recent history may suggest San Diego is the better side tonight, the fact that oddsmakers are making the Padres an underdog tells me everything I need to know.
