For the last few seasons, Corbin Burnes has been one of the best pitchers in the National League, and many regard him as one of the best pitchers in baseball. Burnes has revolutionized the cutter as he throws this pitch at one of the fastest speeds in the league, which makes it so hard to get solid contact off of him because most of his pitches move so much.

Burnes is coming off of a fantastic 2022 campaign, but the start of the 2023 season has not been so kind to him. He comes into this game with a record of 0-1 with an ERA of just under 10. For those who follow baseball, it is extremely rare to see Burnes with an ERA even north of four, as he has pretty much lived in the 2-3.00 range for the last few seasons. His strikeout rate is down and has already walked five hitters on the season as well. He made headlines a few seasons ago for starting the year with 40+ strikeouts before allowing a single walk, so his control has been one of his main issues, but I think this is a fantastic spot for Burnes to get back on track tonight.
Corbin will face a young Diamondbacks team that has shown promise as they come into tonight’s game with a 7-4 record and winners of four straight. Arizona has had success this season by putting the ball in play, as they have the third lowest strikeout percentage in the league through their first 11 games.
This is not the best news for them, though, as Burnes’ cutter is a devastating pitch that thrives off of getting soft contact and ground balls for outs. I also think this line is telling a story as well, considering how hot the Diamondbacks are and how bad Burnes has been to this point, and yet the Brewers are STILL being lined as road favorites.
