We knew the Padres were going to be one of the best teams in baseball. It’s been the Brewers who have been a pleasant surprise, outperforming expectations, especially offensively. Milwaukee ranks ninth in the MLB in batting average and starts a three-game road stand in San Diego tonight. Will the Brewers bats stay hot, or will Juan Soto follow up yesterday’s home run with another?
San Diego Padres vs. Milwaukee Brewers Prediction
One of the best offseason acquisitions in the National League has been William Contreras, batting .364 in 9 games. Garrett Mitchell, the young outfielder, has been extremely impressive for the Brew Crew, along with Jesse Winker and Willy Adames. The Brewers “superstar” Christian Yelich hasn’t broken any early season records but continues to put up good at-bats at the top of that Milwaukee batting order.
This lineup may not have many stars, but they are deep. The entire lineup, from top to bottom, is filled with solid talent. Guys like Brian Anderson, Willy Adames, and Brice Turang aren’t big-name players but have all been seeing the ball well this year.
Don’t let Juan Soto get hot! After yesterday’s home run (which I take full credit for), I can tell that Soto is locked in at the plate. I’ve watched a lot of Soto at-bats in my lifetime, and he looks patient and is keeping his weight back. 2019 World Series Champion Juan Soto is back. The Brewers will only have so many left-handed arms they can pull out of their bullpen. The way Soto is seeing the ball, he will take someone deep tonight if he gets five or six at-bats.
Speaking of the best off-season acquisitions, Xander Bogaerts has fit in like a glove in San Diego since coming over from Boston. Slashing .327 with a .633 SLG, Xander will face an opener in Bryse Wilson, who may or may not be stretched out.
Although the back of that Milwaukee bullpen is solid, Craig Counsell will have his hands full managing a bullpen game against Bogaerts, Soto, and Machado. Even the old man Nelson Cruz has been getting into the action recently and is off to a great 2023.
Whether it’s Wilson and the Brewers bullpen giving up runs to this elite Padres lineup, or an inconsistent Nick Martinez against the red-hot Brewers, we know there are going to be runs. We don’t often see a total at nine at Petco Park, historically known as being a “pitcher’s ballpark.” These lineups will be too much for Martinez and the Brewers bullpen to overcome. Take the over and expect runs from both elite lineups in MLB’s late-night Thursday night matchup.
