Last night, the Athletics did something they’ve only accomplished four times prior in 2023: they won a baseball game. No chance the A’s win two games in a row, right? This is one of gambling’s biggest fallacies: yesterday’s game has nothing to do with today’s.
Yes, you can use recent statistics and trends from previous games to help find winning bets, but that’s not my point. The Athletics winning last night doesn’t mean that they can’t pull off another win tonight, regardless of how terrible their roster is. Personally, I think Oakland has some value tonight as they look to start their first winning streak of the season.

Mason Miller making his debut could go down as the Athletics’ only positive of the 2023 MLB season. He certainly didn’t look like Jacob deGrom in his first start, but you could tell that Miller’s stuff is there. All the hype around his strikeout-heavy potential seems to be valid after he struck out five Chicago Cubs batters in less than five innings in his debut.
The Cubs are top five in baseball in strikeouts, with less than 175 on the season. This was an impressive feat for Miller in his first career start. The young flamethrower was able to shake off the nerves and silence a potent lineup. In his second start of the season tonight, expect Miller’s command to improve. The A’s won’t leave Miller out there for over 100 pitches, but I expect him to throw closer to 90 pitches tonight compared to his 80-pitch-count limit in his debut.
After a 21-run performance from these two offenses last night, oddsmakers are showing serious respect to Miller and the Athletics by setting the total tonight at nine. With over 70% of bets and handle on the over (per VSIN), it's surprising to see this total holding put. With the total holding at 9, expect Miller to shine for Oakland tonight.
Griffin Canning hasn’t been atrocious for the Angels in his two starts this season, giving up two runs to both the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees in the Bronx. If Canning has pitched well up to this point, why have the odds on OAK ML dropped from +170 to +150 on most books? Less than 10% of the bets and handle are backing Oakland to win tonight. This reverse line movement is a great sign for A’s backers.
There won’t be many spots to back the Athletics this year. Take advantage of this team when they are a short underdog; it doesn’t come around often. When the public is hammering the Angels to bounce back after last night’s loss, back the A’s as a short dog with their top prospect on the mound. Mason Miller is going to deal tonight.
