The Giants and Nationals play the final game of their series tonight. Can Patrick Corbin shut down the Giants? Handicapper Krabs answers and shares his best bet for the game.
ANALYSIS

San Francisco Giants vs. Washington Nationals Best Bet: Can Patrick Corbin Shut Down the Giants?

Don’t look now, but Patrick Corbin has looked much improved after recording one of the worst seasons in MLB history on the mound in 2022. After giving up 12 runs in his first three starts, Corbin has settled in. The veteran lefty has dealt for 24.1 innings with 18 strikeouts and only ten earned runs, which is comparable to pitching lights out for him. Facing one of the worst LHP-facing lineups in baseball, will Patrick Corbin stay hot and pitch well once again as he continues his 2023 revenge tour?

San Francisco Giants vs. Washington Nationals Prediction

The Giants are one of the worst teams in baseball. Towards the bottom in nearly every statistical category, San Francisco just hasn’t been able to piece it all together this season, especially at the plate. This team leads baseball in strikeouts, with over 350 on the season thus far. Striking out in nearly 31% of their at-bats, their numbers are even worse against left-handed pitching. The Giants strike out in 33% of their at-bats against lefties in 2023, an impressive stat. If Patrick Corbin has his A+ stuff like he has in his last couple of starts, the Giants’ offense will be no match for his devastating slider.

The total in this game opened up at 7.5. Yes, the total currently resides at 8.5, which seems more accurate with how poorly Corbin has pitched over the years. The opening total at 7.5 is wild, considering not only Corbin’s track record but Logan Webb’s as well. The Giants’ ace just recently brought his ERA down below four after putting up a 2.90 ERA in 2022. With how average Webb has pitched this year and Corbin’s nearly six ERA, an opening total at 7.5 tells me we are getting a pitcher's duel in San Francisco tonight, regardless of where the line has moved.

Last night Jake Irvin dealt for nearly seven scoreless innings, recording five strikeouts. If the Nationals’ 20th-ranked prospect can strike out five Giants hitters and hold them scoreless, you can only imagine how many strikeouts Corbin’s slider will produce tonight. Not only is this San Fran offense subpar, but they’ve also been slumping recently too. Corbin should continue his hot streak against debatably the worst offense in baseball tonight.

As a Nationals fan, I’ve had the pleasure of watching Patrick Corbin pitch when he was good and won us a World Series back in 2019. I’ve also, unfortunately, witnessed him turn into one of the worst pitchers in baseball over the past few seasons. Needless to say, I’ve seen a lot of Patrick Corbin starts in my day. When I tell you that his slider looks nearly identical to how it looked five years ago when he nearly won the Cy Young, I mean it. The veteran lefty hasn’t looked this sharp in years. Tonight, as he faces a struggling Giants lineup that strikes out 33% of their at-bats against LHP, back the over on Corbin’s strikeout prop. The juice on the over has slowly crept up from (+100) to (-120) on some books, a great sign for over bettors.
