Don’t be fooled by their recent homestand; the Arizona Diamondbacks are good. Although they might not be showing it recently, this team has significantly over-performed all preseason expectations up to this point. They might be one of the youngest teams in baseball but don’t sleep on the snakes. Led by two young stars in Corbin Carroll and Zac Gallen, these are two of the sport’s best at their position. With another young arm on the bump in Tommy Henry, will the Diamondbacks “right the ship” against the lowly San Francisco Giants tonight?

Although Tommy Henry hasn’t been great, he has improved in all three starts he’s made this season. He is coming off an impressive quality start against the Washington Nationals, one of the best LHP-facing teams in MLB. Tonight the young lefty faces the worst offense in baseball against left-handed pitching in the San Francisco Giants.
Not only do the Giants struggle against lefties (with a 33% strikeout percentage against LHP in 2023), and they struggle at the plate overall. Even though they lead baseball in strikeouts, it won’t get any easier for the Giants’ bats tonight. Besides Thairo Estrada, no other consistent starter is hitting anywhere close to .300 at the plate for the lowly Giants. This roster is built with declining veterans and underproducing young talent… fade them at all costs, especially against LHP.
Alex Cobb is having a career year. The 35-year-old veteran currently holds a 2.01 ERA through seven starts. Unfortunately for the crafty veteran, the Diamondbacks score plenty of runs at home and prefer facing right-handed pitching. Cobb owns a career ERA closer to 4.00; expect him to regress closer to that number in the coming weeks. The soft-throwing veteran will struggle against this young Diamondbacks’ core.
The Giants have been getting immense line respect for no reason in 2023. Oddsmakers seem to think this team is still competitive from their previous .500 season. This lineup has taken a step back, and although they’ve faired better recently, striking out 33% of at-bats against LHP isn’t a recipe for success.
Coming off a brutal one-run loss, back Arizona to bounce back at home against Alex Cobb and the Giants. Considering how well Cobb has pitched this season, it’s interesting to see the total rise to 9.5. Could regression hit the veteran righty in the form of this young, dynamic Diamondbacks lineup? At (+120), I’ll bet a lefty against the Giants any day of the week.
