New York Yankees vs. San Diego Padres Prediction

Don’t get too excited, Yankees fans, Randy Vasquez is making his MLB debut tonight, but the 24-year-old is only a rotation fill-in. That doesn’t mean the kid doesn’t have nasty stuff, though. He’s your prototypical elite talent who doesn’t yet have full command of the strike zone.

After a rough start in AAA, the young starter has performed well in his last five starts, carrying a 2.67 ERA with 28 strikeouts and only 12 walks in 27 innings pitched. Vasquez has the stuff to dominate in his debut, and although many are saying he may only be “opening” this game, he may pitch too well for Boone to take him out.

Joe Musgrove has missed some time already in 2023 and hasn’t been sharp in his five starts. He’s allowed four or more runs in three of his five starts this season, including an outing against the Giants where Musgrove couldn’t get out of the fourth inning.

The Padres ace simply hasn’t been the same pitcher from 2022 who owned a 1.08 WHIP and sub 3.00 ERA. Until Musgrove returns to form, continue to fade him as he continues to get overvalued in the betting market (hence the line movement from -140 to -115).

The Yankees are coming off two brutal losses to the Baltimore Orioles in close games they easily could have won. Even with these consecutive losses, the Yanks are 7-3 in their last ten games. This team is clearly playing their best baseball of the season over the past two weeks. Aaron Judge is the best hitter in baseball right now, and Harrison Bader is off to a great start with five home runs and 17 RBIs in only 76 plate appearances.

I wouldn’t want to fade the Yankees right now, and the way the line is moving, it looks like the sharps agree. Back the Yankees in Vasquez’ MLB debut to shock Joe Musgrove and the Padres just as the public starts backing them again. Let’s not forget San Diego has one of the poorest-performing offenses in baseball this season.
