Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers Prediction: Should You Fade Martin Perez, Rangers?

The Detroit Tigers are only two games under .500, and nobody is talking about it. AJ Hinch has done an incredible job of managing this young team and putting them in a position to sneak into the playoffs if they continue playing well potentially. Detroit is only two games behind the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central, clearly the weakest division in baseball. Will the Tigers stay hot against the Texas Rangers tonight?

Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers Prediction

Few teams are playing better baseball right now than the Texas Rangers. Winners of eight of their previous ten games and sitting three games ahead of the Astros, nobody expected this team to be in first place nearly a third through the season. Martin Perez hasn’t been nearly as sharp as he was last season when he was an All-Star with a sub-3.00 ERA.

The lefty was roughed up by the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels earlier this month but settled down in his two most recent starts against Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies. Tonight he faces a Tigers offense that prefers facing left-handed pitching. Will Perez continue rounding into mid-season form, or will the Tigers continue to shock the world and pull off another upset at home?

Detroit has a winning record at home this season. They’ve defended Comerica Park nicely to start the year and have another solid opportunity to build on that success tonight against a susceptible lefty. The Rangers opened up a (-140) favorite on the road, which already seemed like a short line considering they’re currently the hottest team in baseball. With nearly 75% of bets and handle backing the Rangers tonight, the odds on their moneyline have moved back to (-130). This reverse line movement is a great sign for Tigers backers.

After a horrid rookie season, Alex Faedo has improved drastically in 2023. The young righty is coming off a ten-strikeout performance against the Chicago White Sox. He’s throwing the slider less in the zone, allowing less contact and more strikeouts. His four-seam fastball has generated significantly less hard contact in 2023, attributed to his newfound success. Faedo has learned that he doesn’t need to fill the zone nearly as much, and it has completely changed the young man’s game. While we still have value on the young righty, I will continue to back Fade on the moneyline at plus money until the sportsbooks adjust to his newfound success.

Nobody wants to back the Tigers against Martin Perez and the red-hot Rangers. That is exactly why we are fading the public and taking Detroit to win. Back Faedo and Detroit’s undervalued young core, who’s been performing well at the plate recently, especially against left-handed pitching.
