Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres Prediction: Expect Blake Snell, Kyle Hendricks to Struggle

Last night I gave you guys the over in the Cubs vs Padres game, and after eight runs in the first three innings, the bats went silent. All we needed was one run in the final six innings to cash, and we didn’t get it. Most wouldn’t immediately go back to the over after last night’s brutal beat, but we might not have a choice with these two pitchers on the bump tonight. Will we finally get an over in this series tonight, or will the bats continue to let us down?

Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres Prediction

The Cubs haven’t hit an over in more than a week. Overs are 10-20 in games at Petco Park this season. With two big name arms on the bump tonight for both the Cubs and Padres, nobody is going to want to bet this over. As everyone hops off the Cubs and Padres overs, this is when we double down.

This total opened up at 8 before getting steamed up to 8.5 juiced to the over, an interesting line move after the first three games of this series went under. It looks like the sharps are finally expecting an offensive outburst in San Diego. Now the question is, where will the runs be coming from?

Blake Snell has not been at his best in his eighth MLB season. He is coming off two great starts against the Marlins and Nationals though. Tonight he faces one of the best LHP-facing teams in the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are hitting .279 against LHP this season. Snell has done a decent job at limiting hard contact in 2023 (43rd percentile in average exit velocity), but the veteran lefty has really struggled with his command of late. Snell has already walked 34 batters in 56 innings this season, and doesn’t seem to be improving at all.

Chicago is the third most patient team in baseball with 220 walks this season. Not only do they prefer facing lefties, they also match up great against Snell with his recent command issues. If he gives Chicago free passes, they will capitalize. Expect the Cubs to put up plenty of runs themselves in this matchup.

Kyle Hendricks has only made two starts in 2023 after starting the season on the IL. Although he’s limited the runs so far, he’s allowed twelve hits over 9.1 innings pitched. The Padres are starting to put together much better at bats at the plate, lead by Juan Soto who’s second in baseball in OBP this season. If you’ve been watching this series, even their outs have been “unlucky” line drives right to the Cubs’ outfielders. Tonight, against a slow-throwing Hendricks, look for San Diego to finally see some base hits fall as they’re due for some good luck.

Instead of trying to bet the Padres to win at (-175), back the over as both teams have great matchups tonight. Snell's command issues should result in plenty of opportunities for the Cubs, and Hendricks has been getting away with some suspect pitches lately. Back the over and enjoy the show as this one should be action-packed and filled with plenty of runs from both sides.
