Tyler Wells is an average starting pitcher on the road with a 4.17 ERA. At home, though, Wells is a different animal. The 28-year-old converted closer owns a 2.52 ERA in eight home starts this season. Expect Wells’ best on the bump in Baltimore tonight against the Reds, who are looking to end their three-game skid.
The Baltimore Orioles barely opened up a betting favorite when this line opened but have since been steamed up to (-150) on the moneyline. This is a significant move, considering barely half the bets and handle are currently backing the Orioles. There must be some sharps who took Baltimore, and the books had no choice but to move the odds.
Instead of dealing with these bullpens, back the Orioles in the first five innings. I am worried that we might get some late-game heroics from the Reds, as we’ve seen over previous weeks. With the wind blowing out, let’s eliminate the bullpens altogether and strictly back Wells to succeed and Abbott to struggle.
Andrew Abbott has looked great since getting promoted to the major league club in June. He finally allowed his first runs of the season in his fourth start last week. Abbott gave up three home runs to the struggling Rockies, which could be a red flag for more regression to come. Expect Baltimore to take advantage of the wind blowing out to center field, and hit some long balls on Dinger Tuesday.
Back the Orioles to win the first five innings of this game tonight. Although both teams have solid closers, it’s best to eliminate both bullpens in this matchup.
