Both of these teams have overly performed this year but this should be a grind-it-out type of game that should have both offenses flowing early on. The Red Sox return home from a seven-game road trip and are losers of four out of their last five games.
In tonight's game, taking the mound for the Red Sox is Garrett Whitlock, who, in three starts at home has a 2-0 record with an era of 3.38. In his last start in Minnesota, he avoided a loss when the Red Sox came back to tie in the ninth but ultimately lost in extra innings.
Whitlock is among the many young pitching prospects for the Red Sox and has shown great command on the mound. The 27-year-old avoids walking batters, one of his key skills, and he primarily uses his high 90s fastball to paint the corners. He also uses his changeup as his secondary pitch to catch a lot of batters off guard.
He will be going against the Miami Marlins' former National League Cy Young Sandy Alcantara, who hasn’t lived up to his potential struggling on the road. He supports a 1-2 record with an era of 5.36 pitching away from Miami. In his last two starts, Alcantara has been really tough to watch this year. He has given up ten runs in the last two games alone, which pretty much sums up his current season.
