Los Angeles Angels vs. Chicago White Sox Prediction
Despite his recent outstanding 16-strikeout performance, Lance Lynn has been one of my favorite pitchers to fade, dating back to last season. He’s coming with some very solid recent form, throwing 23 strikeouts over his last two outings against the Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners. Despite that, he still allowed three runs in each of those outings, and I think that’s a good microcosm of why I love betting on him; he’s consistent.
To me, Lynn falls in a similar category to other veteran pitchers like Carlos Carrasco. They get the job done, generate some quality starts for their teams each inning, and get ready to get back out there every fifth day. When you survive this long in the MLB without crazy strikeout stuff, you will rely on inducing soft contact, which generally means throwing some very hit-able pitches to very strong batters. Don’t get me wrong, Lance has proved the strikeout stuff is there, but it’s always come with a high zone contact rate. As Lynn has gotten older, he’s obviously begun to miss more corners and run into more barrels (hence the 6.40 ERA).
The Angels are far from the most consistent lineup in baseball, but they are a team I trust to destroy hittable pitching. Shohei Ohtani is absolutely crushing balls right now, and Lynn can’t get a lefty out to save his life, allowing a .350 OBA/.644 SLG. Ohtani becomes one of the most obvious home-run candidates on the slate, and any lefty in this lineup becomes a very solid target for your batter props. Mickey Moniak and Mike Moustakas are two lefties to keep your eyes out for tonight, especially with the strong recent form.
I choose Lynn over 2.5 earned runs at -130 on BetMGM versus first five team total at -115 because I think it provides a little more value. As I said earlier, Lynn is extremely consistent, and one thing he does very well is get deep into games. He’s currently -190 to go over 17.5 outs, meaning we are only paying 15 more cents for the opportunity to get an extra inning out of Lynn. There are risks to this bet, with a chance for errors and unearned runs, but I think the value outweighs the risk.
