Shane McClanahan might be starting his second consecutive All-Star game next weekend, but right now, he looks hittable. McClanahan is coming off his worst start of the season, where he barely couldn’t make it through four innings of work against the Kansas City Royals. It won’t be easy, but the Mariners have a chance to get to the Tampa Bays Rays’ ace tonight.
The Rays have been unbeatable when McClanahan pitches at home this season, but his ERA is nearly a run higher on the road. Tonight, the Rays’ young lefty will look to bounce back from a tough start against a Mariners team who hits left-handed pitching very well. Even Jarred Kelenic, a lefty in the Mariners’ lineup, has reverse splits.
If anyone can hand Shane McClanahan a loss, it’s this Mariners team in their home park. Yes, this team has struggled compared to last season, but the Mariners are 22-19 at T-Mobile Park in 2023. McClanahan clearly doesn’t have his best stuff right now… don’t be surprised if the Mariners hit him well.
Bryce Miller has looked unhittable at times this season but has more poor starts under his belt in his rookie season than quality starts. Considering the Mariners are barely an underdog with a low total, it seems oddsmakers expect a gem from Miller. When he’s on, Miller is more than capable of throwing a gem, no matter the opponent.
With less than 5% of the handle currently backing the Mariners tonight, fade the public and back Miller and the Mariners on the moneyline. The Rays have the best record in baseball, have the best starting pitcher in baseball on the mound debatably, and are barely a favorite against the sub-.500 Mariners? Something seems fishy about this line, and I want in.
