Cincinnati Reds vs. San Diego Padres Prediction: Can Andrew Abbott, Reds Bounce Back?

The San Diego Padres are coming off a big win, beating the Cincinnati Reds 12-5 and ending their losing streak. Don’t be fooled by this win; the Padres are 3-7 in their last ten games and will be facing one of the best young pitchers in baseball this afternoon.

Cincinnati Reds vs. San Diego Padres Prediction

Andrew Abbott has been the anchor in this Reds’ starting rotation. Since his debut in June, the left-handed rookie has only allowed four runs in nearly 30 innings pitched. He’s faced some of the best lineups in baseball, too, in Baltimore, Houston, and St. Louis, and mowed them all down. This kid is the real deal.

These two teams couldn’t be more different. On one side, you’ve got the stacked Padres’ roster which continues to underperform. Then you’ve got the young, hard-working Reds, who might have the best “mojo” in MLB. The Reds have crowned themselves as “America’s Team,” and they continue to win games. After getting smacked in the mouth last night by San Diego, expect the fighting Reds to bounce back with a win.

The Padres are calling up Pedro Avila to make the start for the big league club this afternoon. Avila has not pitched well in AAA, but with Yu Darvish hurt, the Padres need another arm in the rotation. They aren’t calling up Avila because he’s ready; they’re calling him up because they need a spot starter. This could go very poorly for the Padres, as he faces one of the best lineups in baseball in a very hitter-friendly ballpark.

Before the season started, if I would have told you the Reds would be (-145) with a rookie pitcher on the bump against the Padres, you wouldn’t have believed me. We’re in July, and the season has almost approached the halfway mark. The Padres have yet to show any signs of life this season, and until they do, I will continue to fade them. The Reds keep winning; expect them to bounce back after last night’s brutal loss and earn a series win with Abbott on the bump.
