Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Mets Prediction: Can Kodai Senga, Mets Dominate?

The Arizona Diamondbacks dropped the series opener yesterday in a high-scoring affair as the offense got to Max Scherzer, but their pitching could not hold up. Can they bounce back tonight against the New York Mets? Let’s break it down.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Mets Prediction: Can Kodai Senga, Mets Dominate?

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been one of the biggest surprises in Major League Baseball this season, as they enter today’s contest with a record of 50-35 and sit atop the standings in the always competitive NL West. Many people thought the San Diego Padres would run away with this division after the multitude of trades and off-season signings, and the eventual return of Fernando Tatis Jr. from suspension, but it has been the upstart rookies and crafty veterans of Arizona who have been the stars of the division.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Mets Prediction

For the most part, Arizona has earned their success through their extremely potent lineup. The addition of Corbin Carroll has jump-started their whole offense, and others have followed suit in elevating their play as well. Arizona is currently in the top six in the league in team batting average, on-base percentage, total runs scored, and slugging percentage.

The off-season trade the Diamondbacks made with the Toronto Blue Jays that brought in Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is also looking like an absolute steal for them as Gurriel Jr. made his first all-star team this season and has a slash line of .268/.319/.495 with 14 homers and 50 runs batted in, as his power has started to emerge again. Christian Walker is also another big-time power bat in the middle of their lineup, as he has 17 home runs and a slugging percentage over .500.

The arm the Diamondbacks will face tonight is Kodai Senga, who is having a solid season with an ERA of 3.53, but Senga has really struggled with his command at times. Senga has already walked 46 batters In just 81 2/3rds innings and has regressed a bit over the past months. This Arizona lineup will be the biggest challenge he has seen since facing Toronto about a month ago, where he failed to get out of the third inning, as Senga allowed three runs and walked five batters.

Arizona is a very fast and patient lineup that usually puts the ball in play. This combination of a keen ability to get on base and elite team speed has allowed them to take a lot of extra bases and steal games from their opponents.

On the other side for Arizona, tonight will be lefty Tommy Henry, who is coming into his own in a major way over his last few starts, especially at home. Over his last five home starts, Henry has only allowed 11 earned runs over 30 1/3rd innings for a very respectable 3.23 ERA. Henry’s strikeout rate has also been up over his last four starts, which is another good sign that he is settling in well to a big league rotation and that his stuff is finally starting to play.

I am rolling with Arizona F5 ML at -101 and Arizona Full Game ML at -108 for 1.5u each for a 3U total position on the Diamondbacks tonight. I think they get to Senga early and often through their patience and working deep counts. I see Arizona winning a 5-3 or 6-2 type ball game tonight.
