Merrill Kelly has been a huge part of the Arizona Diamondbacks' resurgence over the past few years, but this will be his first start back after a month-long hiatus. Can we trust him tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals? Let's break it down.

Merrill Kelly returns from injury tonight and looks to continue his excellent season to this point. He currently has a stellar 3.22 ERA to go along with a 9-4 record and a 1.14 WHIP. Kelly is not known as a strikeout pitcher as he does not throw in the high 90s or triple digits, but he is having a resurgent season in the strikeout department. He has 98 Ks in 95 innings averaging over a strikeout per inning which would be the highest mark of his career by a large amount.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. St. Louis Cardinals Prediction
Even though the St. Louis Cardinals are having a tough season overall, they are still a very solid offensive club, as they are in the top half of the National League in most offensive categories. While this may be a tough matchup on paper for Kelly, I think he is poised for success tonight. Kelly usually does the bulk of his damage by inducing soft contact to keep his pitch count down and wiggle out of jams. Kelly has a deep repertoire of pitches and is extremely crafty for a right-handed pitcher, as he does not solely rely on velocity or talent alone to get hitters out.
On the other side for the Cardinals will be Steven Matz, who has been having some success lately, but overall it has been a season to forget. He comes into this contest with a 1-7 record and a 4.67 ERA to go along with a 1.47 WHIP. The Diamondbacks have been struggling mightily lately as they have lost five games in a row, but four of those were on the road, and I do think Arizona will come out with a sense of urgency tonight to get off the snide and even this home series at one a piece. With that being said, I am rolling with Arizona F5 ML at -115 and Arizona Full Game ML at -115 for 1U each as my most confident MLB plays of the day.
