Justin Verlander could be making his final start for the New York Mets tonight. Rumors have been circulating for the past few weeks about the Mets shipping Verlander to a contender. The future “Hall of Famer” has been dialed in over the last two months, driving his stock up in the trade market immensely. Will Verlander throw another gem tonight against the last-place New York Yankees?

I’m willing to bet that Justin Verlander doesn’t pitch as well as everyone’s expecting tonight. Yes, Verlander is hitting his stride, and it looks like he’s finally in mid-season form, but the odds have shifted nearly thirty cents toward the Yankees in this matchup. That is a significant line move, considering how well Verlander has pitched over the past few months, especially with him coming off his best start of the season last week against the Chicago White Sox. If Verlander has only allowed five hits in his last two starts combined, why are the Yankees drawing sharp action?
The Yankees are in last place in the AL East, but they’re still six games over .500. The betting public is acting like Verlander is pitching for the Astros tonight, not the lowly Mets. The “little brother” of New York baseball teams might have the pitching advantage on paper tonight, but Verlander will have to win this game himself, with no help from his underperforming offense, if he wants to win his last game as a Met before getting traded.
Although Aaron Judge is still hurt, and this Yankees offense may not look potent on paper, they are coming off a sweep against the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees put up at least five runs in each of those games and looked dialed in at the plate for the majority of the series. Although the Yankees probably aren’t making the playoffs, they do know how to win at home. The Yankees are 31-23 at Yankees Stadium in 2023 and will be looking to improve that record against the overvalued Mets tonight.
Domingo German might carry a 4.52 ERA at this point in the season, but he did throw a perfect game last month. The start before his perfect game, German allowed ten runs against the Mariners. The 30-year-old right-handler seems to follow up his worst starts with his best, and vice versa. Well, German got roughed up for the first time in months against the Los Angeles Angels in his last outing. I’m not saying you should expect another perfect game from German… just don’t be surprised if he makes up for his poor outing last week with a gem tonight.
With the entire public backing Verlander to continue his mid-season dominance, fade the public and back the Yankees on the moneyline. This game is almost at a Pick ‘Em after the Mets opened up (-145) favorites. The Yankees are clearly the sharp side in this matchup; bet them before they become the betting favorite.
