The Chicago Cubs have lost four of Stroman’s last five starts, a trend that won't slow down against their Chicago counterpart tonight.

As the second half of the MLB season unfolds, it’s clear the Chicago White Sox are out of playoff contention. Rumors have been circulating around potential trades, including Lance Lynn allegedly drawing interest from the Tampa Bay Rays. This could be Lynn’s last start in Chicago, and although he’s struggled mightily in 2023, wouldn’t it be fitting if he leaves Chicago with one last gem of an outing?
On paper, betting on Marcus Stroman and the Cubs tonight looks like easy money against Lynn and the White Sox. If that’s the case, why is this game a Pick ‘Em? Lynn is coming off a nine-run outing against the Twins, where he got destroyed, raising his ERA to 6.18 on the season… the Cubs should be (-200) to beat the White Sox tonight, right?
This is strictly a line play for me. The fact that oddsmakers are giving Lynn and the White Sox this much respect on a four-game losing streak is hard to comprehend. The Cubs are on a four-game winning streak, only two games under .500, and still alive not only in the Wildcard race but in the NL Central pennant race as well. The White Sox are dead, twenty games under .500, with nearly a 0% chance to make the playoffs. Again, we are betting the line, not the team here…
Not only are the Cubs extremely public tonight, every “square” bettor on the planet will be backing Stroman and the Cubs against Lynn in this spot. Although fading the public isn’t a profitable system on its own, it’s always a great sign to be on the opposing side of the money. More than 80% of the bets and handle are currently backing the Cubs tonight, and the odds haven’t moved a cent. This is another great sign for White Sox backers, as the books are clearly content with being overexposed on the Cubs tonight.
This bet isn’t for the faint of heart. The White Sox have nothing to play for tonight. Their season is already over, with their chances of making the playoffs slim to none. You know who does have something to play for tonight? Lance Lynn will be looking to impress his potential new team. I’m sure Lynn is tired of wasting his final seasons in Chicago on a losing team… if he wants out, he’s going to have to prove he still has some gas left in the tank. In what could be his final start as a member of the White Sox, back Lynn to outpitch Stroman tonight.
