New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Prediction
I’m going to be playing Pete Alonso’s RBI ladder today against Josiah Gray and the Nationals. The books are telling us that they are expecting some runs and a Mets win with a total set at nine and juiced to the over, and the Mets favored at around -215 odds. Pete has been swinging well as of late after breaking out of a slump. He has recorded nine hits in his last six games, hitting two home runs and recording six RBIs.
He is hitting in the four spot, with Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo hitting ahead of him. Both guys have had a lot of success against Josiah Gray in their careers, with McNeil a career 4-9 and Nimmo a career 4-8 against Gray. They have also been getting on base more over the last week or so, with McNeil scoring five runs in the last eight games and Nimmo scoring six runs in the last eight games. I am expecting them to reach base multiple times and set the stage for Pete Alonso, and give him multiple RBI opportunities.
The main reason I am laddering Pete’s RBIs today is because I think he is going to hit a home run. He has one home run in his last two games against Josiah Gray, who has been more prone to home runs against right-handed batters this season (nine home runs in 58.1 innings versus six home runs in 54 versus lefties).
Gray’s pitch mix is perfect for Pete, as he has crushed the top three pitches he will see today (against right-handed pitching). He has 17 home runs in 212 plate appearances against sliders, sinkers, and 4-seam fastballs (versus RHP) for an extremely good 8.0% HR/PA %. He has hit these pitches hard this season – below are his hard hit and barrel metrics vs them.
- versus sliders (RHP) – 53.8% Hard Hit% | 25.6% Barrel %
- versus sinkers (RHP) – 39.4% Hard Hit % | 10.6% Barrel %
- versus 4-seam fastballs (RHP) – 53.5% Hard Hit % | 16.3% Barrel %
I think we will see Pete barrel one up and go for extra bases in this matchup. In games that Alonso has recorded an extra-base hit, he has recorded 1+ RBI in 28 out of 34 games, 2+ RBIs in 18 out of 34 games, and 3+ RBIs in 10 out of 34 games. Eleven of Alonso’s last 14 home runs have come with runners on base, and I think the same opportunities will be there tonight. Let's climb the ladder, Pete!
