This may surprise some people, but the New York Mets, who have the highest payroll in baseball, are less than five games ahead of the last-place Washington Nationals. If you took away the names on the front and back of the jerseys and just watched these two teams play over the last week, you’d guess the Nationals were the better team. Don’t let the Nats get hot! Ever since Davey Martinez moved CJ Abrams into the leadoff spot, this offense has taken it up a notch. Will they continue this impressive stretch tonight at Citi Field with extremely friendly hitting conditions?

New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Prediction
It’s been the Nationals’ offense that’s won them six of their previous ten games. Everyone at this point has to be at least relatively impressed with the Nats’ offense; nobody expected run production like this from this roster. Unfortunately, Washington has one of the worst bullpens in baseball, costing them numerous close games throughout the year. With Hunter Harvey still on the IL, nobody in the Nats’ bullpen will be creating any fear in the Mets’ hearts.
Josiah Gray was recently named an All Star for the first time in his young career, but he’s not going to look like an All Star tonight. Not only are the hitting conditions extremely favorable at Citi Field tonight (+7% runs increase per Ballpark Pal), this Mets lineup has seen Gray very well in a small sample. Besides Francisco Lindor, who’s 0-8 in his career against Gray, the rest of this Mets’ team is 18-58 with a .310 batting average. Expect Josiah to once again get roughed up by the Mets.
Kodai Senga has been nearly unhittable at home this season, allowing only 14 earned runs in over 50 innings pitched. The Nationals battled against Senga a few weeks back, putting up some good at bats against the 30 year old rookie. With the way Washington has hit the ball this past week, I wouldn’t be surprised if they get to him. After all, he did only last 3.1 innings in his last start…
For the first time in a while, the Nationals’ offense looks sharp. Unfortunately for Josiah Gray and the Nats, they won’t be the only offense finding success tonight. With the wind blowing out at Citi Field, bet the over and back these offenses to shine on MLB Network.
