When Robbie Ray got placed on the IL for the remainder of the season, the Seattle Mariners needed an arm to step up. Unfortunately for the Mariners, Logan Gilbert hasn’t improved in his third MLB season. He’s struggled mightily of late and got roughed up for five runs against the Toronto Blue Jays last week. With his name being thrown around on the trade block, will we finally see a vintage Gilbert start?

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction
The Arizona Diamondbacks have struggled mightily for the greater part of a month. They’ve lost seven of their last ten games, but their offense seems to have turned a corner against the Cardinals in their last series. This Diamondbacks lineup was one of the best in baseball for the majority of the first half, don’t be surprised if they get hot again down the stretch.
The Mariners are coming off a series win against the Twins, putting up a combined 17 runs in the last two games. If the Mariners are “back,” why are they barely a favorite tonight against the reeling Diamondbacks? I am not a believer in the Mariners, who made an incredible run ending their playoff draught last year. The public seems to still have a soft spot for the Mariners, especially tonight against the Diamondbacks.
Although the Mariners are a popular pick today, the odds on the moneyline have moved twenty cents towards Arizona. This is an interesting line move to say the least, considering Seattle is heating up and Arizona is struggling.
Tommy Henry has been inconsistent all year, putting up a 2.87 ERA in May and following it up with a horrid 4.61 ERA in June. In July, Henry seems to have settled down a little, with three decent starts in July. If Henry can keep his command in check and limit the walks, I don’t see how he doesn’t earn his first win tonight post-All-Star break. His opposing starter, Logan Gilbert, has looked much worse in July.
The Mariners might be the most popular play on the MLB slate tonight, with the public backing Seattle to keep trending upward and Gilbert to bounce back. I liked what I saw out of Arizona’s bats this week, and I’m willing to bet that they get to Gilbert once again tonight. Fade the public and back the Diamondbacks as a short home underdog before the moneyline gets any shorter.
