Sonny Gray has had an excellent season to this point as he enters this contest with a record of 4-4 and an ERA of 3.22 with a K/9 of just under one per inning. Gray is not a power pitcher who throws 99+, but he does use a large repertoire of pitches and multiple different off-speed pitches to draw soft contact and get hitters off balance.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Minnesota Twins Prediction
While Gray has had a solid season, he has been scuffling a bit over the last few months and in his starts post-all-star break. In his last two road starts in particular, Gray has allowed ten hits and eight earned runs while walking four total batters (all against the Seattle Mariners) in just 11 2/3rds innings. Gray hasn’t been getting obliterated lately, but he has been giving up big hits with runners in scoring position, and some of that positive regression/luck from earlier in the season is starting to catch up to him.
Tonight he will face a very solid Cardinals lineup that is near the top of the National League in a lot of offensive categories. The problem with the Cardinals this season has not been their offense but their abysmal starting pitching and bullpen. They recently traded Jack Flaherty and star reliever Jordan Hicks in what appeared to be a bit of a fire sale for St. Louis after one of their worst seasons in recent memory.
Lefty Matthew Liberatore takes the mound for the Cards tonight, and he has been struggling mightily. He failed to even get out of the first inning of his last start, as he allowed five hits and four earned runs while only notching one out. On the season, Liberatore has an ERA of 6.75 and a staggering WHIP of 1.84, so there has been a ton of traffic on the basepaths when Liberatore has been on the hill. The Cardinals are also not rolling out their best lineup tonight, as Nolan Arenado and Wilson Contreras are absent from the lineup with an apparent day off in the last game of this series.
I really think Minnesota will take advantage of the rubber match in this series with their ace on the mound against a Struggle Liberatore and a mediocre, at best, Cardinal lineup. With that being said, I am rolling with Minnesota F5 ML at -122 and Minnesota Full Game ML at -130 for 1.5u each for a 3U position on the Twins tonight for my most confident MLB plays of the day.
