Last night, Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter in only his second start with the Phillies. The Nationals were unable to record a single hit against the All-Star. One of my most profitable MLB systems just so happens to be fading teams/pitchers after a no-hitter. The Phillies are (-260) on the moneyline and it’s tough to find reasoning for fading this red-hot team against the underwhelming Nationals. Instead, I’m thinking outside the box and fading the Phillies a different way…

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals
Patrick Corbin has greatly improved since recording one of the worst seasons in MLB history last year. It seems like the better his opponent is, the better he pitches. He’s had much better outings against the Reds Cubs and Rangers over the last month and a half than he did against the Mets and Rockies. Tonight he will be facing one of the hottest teams in baseball and a divisional rival.
The Nationals aren’t going to make the playoffs this year, but they have exceeded the majority of their preseason expectations. This team is gritty, constantly fighting their way back into ballgames and bouncing back after tough losses. Who better to have on the mound than Patrick Corbin after getting no-hit last night? I’m willing to bet he leads the charge tonight as the Nationals look to rebound.
Yes, the Phillies are on fire right now. They are at the beginning of a similar run to last year when they shocked the world on the way to a World Series. I don’t want to be fading this team often, but after a no-hitter, Corbin may catch the Phillies sleeping.
Although Corbin’s “strikeout stuff” hasn’t been there over his last two starts, the Phillies do strike out the seventh most in baseball. Their roster strikes out 28% of the time against left-handed pitchers, above league average.
The Phillies have seen Corbin in 199 at-bats, striking out 29% of the time. If Corbin records 17 outs, just below his o/u 17.5 outs recorded prop, he needs to strike them out in 29% of their at-bats tonight to hit his strikeout prop of 4.5. Many of the biggest names in this lineup, like Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos, strike out at an even higher clip. Corbin doesn’t have to do anything special tonight to hit his strikeout prop, he just needs to be himself.
Bet “Patty Ice” to record more than 4.5 strikeouts against the Phillies tonight. He might catch this lineup sleeping after their historic night, and the Phillies strike out a ton already. He might end up with double-digit strikeouts in this one…
