MLB Player Props Today - Tuesday's Marlins vs. Astros Ladder Play
I like Yordan Alvarez today against Johnny Cueto and the Miami Marlins. Yordan is entering this game only hitting .143 in his last seven games, but those numbers are extremely deceiving. He has had eight batted balls hit over 98 MPH EV, which has not resulted in hits over these last seven games. Over that stretch, his expected batting AVG is .342, which shows how unlucky he has truly been as of late. He isn't finding gaps and is hitting it right at the opposing team.
Tonight, I think that changes. Cueto looks to be a great matchup for Alvarez. His top three pitches to opposing left-handed batters are his 4-seam fastball, slider, and changeup. Against right-handed pitching, these are three of Yordan’s best pitch types, as you can see below.
- vs 4-seam fastballs: .325 xBA | .712 xSLG | 71.4% Hard Hit % | 26.2% Barrel %
- vs sliders: .312 xBA | .625 xSLG | 63.2% Hard Hit % | 21.1% Barrel %
- vs changeups: .367 xBA | .933 xSLG | 48% Hard Hit % | 20% Barrel %
Not only has he been crushing these three pitches this year, but they were also his three best pitch types last season. This sets up nicely for Alvarez as Cueto is allowing a 9.5% Barrel % which is much higher than the league AVG (6.9%), and he has struggled more so against lefties than righties this season.
Against left-handed batters at home, Cueto is allowing a .225 AVG and a .300 ISO with a 3.38 home run/9 and 55% fly ball %. With how well Kyle Tucker and Jose Altuve have been hitting and the Astros only putting up one run in each of the last two games, I think they are poised for a breakout game scoring a lot of runs. I think there is a great chance we see Yordan barrel one up and send a baseball to the bleachers, so I will be taking his RBIs laddered all the way up to three.
