Considering the amount of money the San Diego Padres spent this offseason, the expectation was they’d be a playoff team. With less than two months of the regular season remaining, San Diego is still 4.5 games out of the Wildcard. It’s possible for them to make a late run at it, but they’ll have to pass the Arizona Diamondbacks first.

Both the Padres and Diamondbacks haven’t played up to their potential of late. Arizona has lost six of their last ten and have gotten worse as the season has carried on. The Padres have lost seven of their last ten, including two straight wins against the O’s last series. It’s now or never for both of these NL teams, as Arizona remains 1.5 games back of a postseason spot, and the Padres are three games behind them.
This series is pivotal for both of these organizations. The Padres have a chance to jump the Diamondbacks if they pull off a sweep. Tonight, they’ll be throwing Rich Hill, the 43 year old crafty veteran. He’ll face Zac Gallen, one of the best young arms in the game.
Although Gallen has been solid this season, owning a 3.24 ERA, he does have one kryptonite… pitching on the road. Gallen carries a 1.82 ERA in twelve starts at home this season, but has an ERA close to 5.00 on the road. He is a completely different pitcher at home and on the road, which presents value on the Padres tonight.
This Diamondbacks’ offense has taken monumental steps backward throughout the season. They were one of the best teams in baseball through the first two months of the year but are now barely above .500. This is a team I want to continue to fade, especially with an overvalued Gallen on the road tonight.
If you take one look at this Padres lineup, you’d have no doubts that they’re a playoff team. Well, they’re still five games below .500 and 4.5 games back in the Wildcard race. If Juan Soto, Xander Bogaerts and Manny Machado want to make up for their atrocious start to the year, it has to start tonight.
Rich Hill got roughed up by the Diamondbacks last week. He couldn’t even get out of the fourth inning, and is now a pick ‘em against Zac Gallen tonight? It’s also worth noting that Gallen threw a six inning shutout against the Padres last week too. After hearing all this… why are the Padres not (+200) in this game?
I’ll tell you why…it’s because they are going to win tonight. Bet the Padres on the moneyline, and enjoy the show. Gallen is overrated, especially on the road.
