It's always fun to put a few bucks on a longshot dinger parlay in hopes you can turn a few dollars into a grand. In tonight's case, this three-leg home run parlay would pay out $1,587.00 on a $10 bet. For a little safer bet, I also built it into a bases parlay, where each player would need 2-plus bases to cash a +736 parlay, which I'm obviously more confident in, even though the payout is not as sweet. Let's get into it.
MLB Parlays for Wednesday, August 23
Leg 1: C.J. Abrams 1+ Home Run +560 / 2+ Bases -105
For such a small guy, C.J. Abrams still has the swing to go yard sometimes. He only has a 33.8% hard-hit rate, but his swing is fast, and he has excellent technique, which is how he's gotten 13 homers this year. In this series, he has the advantage of the short porch, which has been making homers out of routine flyouts for years in the Bronx. Abrams didn't need the short porch when he hit one to the second deck last night for a go-ahead home run in the eighth, and I like him to go back-to-back tonight.
Abrams has only hit home runs in back-to-back games once this season, but he has a great opportunity to do so against Luis Severino tonight. Lefty hitters have a 1.104 OPS off Severino, and he has given up ten home runs to lefties in just 141 at-bats, or a home run every 14 at-bats. Abrams is not usually known for his power, which is why he is +560 to hit a home run, but with the short porch and a struggling Severino, I could see him going back-to-back tonight.
Leg 2: Mookie Betts 1+ Home Run +250 / 2+ Bases -155
Talk about small guys with power. Mookie Betts is listed at 5' 9" and 180 pounds, and yet he is 4th in the MLB with 34 home runs. Betts' swing is just so pure; the torque he creates with his level swing just drills balls. Someone that small should not be able to hit a ball like he can, and he is as hot as ever right now. Betts is having the best month of the season so far, hitting .419 in August with a 1.273 OPS. He also has seven home runs in just 74 at-bats in August, averaging just under a home run every ten at-bats this month.
Mookie has excellent hitting conditions tonight, as it is getting hotter and more humid in Cleveland tonight, as a storm is expected later. Hopefully, the storm can hold off until the end of the game because the humid conditions should give some good carry on the ball. There is an expected +29% boost on home runs in Progressive Field tonight, according to Ballpark Pals metrics, which is the second-highest boost of all parks on tonight's slate. Mookie has hit three home runs in his last four games, and he has 2+ bases in eight of his last nine games. This one should hit.
Leg 3: Harrison Bader 1+ Home Run +560 / 2+ Bases +145
Harrison Bader only has seven home runs this year, so I can understand why you may be scratching your head, but stick with me. Bader has had limited action this season, especially against lefties, but he crushes lefties. In fact, he has only 57 at-bats this season against lefty pitchers and 208 against righties, yet he has MORE home runs against lefties. He has four off-lefties and three off-righties. So, while seven home runs on the season doesn't sound like a lot, he has four home runs in just 57 at-bats off lefties. He is also batting .368 off lefties with a 1.158 OPS and just .216 with a .531 OPS off righties. He has 12 extra-base hits in those 57 at-bats off lefties, too, showcasing his power off southpaws. The guy is just born to hit lefties. He will crush one off Gore tonight.
