Jose Altuve loves to swing at the first pitch. I think that will play to his advantage tonight as he faces Max Scherzer. Mad Max is a future Hall of Famer, but he hasn’t pitched in over a month. The Rangers are asking him to do the impossible tonight: come off the IL and pitch like a future Hall of Famer.
I’m not sure the Rangers are going to get what they expect from Scherzer tonight. Although he wouldn’t sign off to pitch if he didn’t think he was ready, we know how much of a competitor Max Scherzer is. I think Scherzer’s competitiveness will both help and hurt the veteran tonight. He always has his best “stuff” under the brightest of lights, so I’m not doubting he won’t be pumping gas or throwing nasty sliders. I do think he will struggle with his command though, especially early on.
Mad Max is obviously going to be looking to open this game up with a strike. He hasn’t pitched in over a month; he has to establish his command and shake off the rust early on in this one, or it might get ugly for the Rangers. I’m willing to bet Scherzer leaves a fastball over the plate for Altuve on the first pitch of this game, and he isn’t going to miss it. We’ve been waiting for Altuve’s shining moment this postseason, and what better way for the other future Hall of Famer himself to break out of this slump.
