Zac Gallen is widely known as the ace of the Diamondbacks. He’s pitched fairly well up to this point of the season if you look at his stats, but let’s not forget that Gallen was the luckiest pitcher in baseball in 2023. That luck has to run out at some point, and the Cardinals tee’d-off on Arizona’s ace last year for five runs and a couple home runs. Could his luck run out on Sunday afternoon?
The Diamondbacks are in luck on Sunday. They get a match-up against one of the more overrated starters in baseball this afternoon. Many of these Arizona hitters have seen Mikolas a decent amount over the years. He was able to hold the Phillies and Padres to only four combined runs in his last two starts, but the veteran righty did give up over a dozen hits in those games. Like Gallen, Mikolas has been a little lucky recently…
There’s a reason this total opened up at o/u 9 after last night’s under. These starting pitchers are regarded highly, but the oddsmakers aren’t buying into the hype surrounding Gallen and Mikolas. If the sportsbooks respected these starters, the total wouldn’t have opened up as high as it did.
Instead of targeting the full game total in this contest, let’s isolate the starters and target the F5 total here. All it’s going to take is one of these two starting pitchers to get hit-up by either of these solid lineups for this F5 total to soar over. When Mikolas and Gallen tend to struggle, it’s not common but it typically gets ugly. They’ve been known to give up a crooked-number in the scorebook a time or two.
