The Washington Nationals will finish off their trip to Oakland with a final game against the A's on Sunday afternoon. Can the Athletics' bats overwhelm Trevor Williams and the Nats as a rare betting favorite? Krabs provides his prediction and pick in this Nationals vs. Athletics clash.

Washington Nationals vs. Oakland Athletics Prediction: Can Athletics Outscore Trevor Williams, Nationals?

What a series it’s been between the Nationals and Athletics this weekend. After splitting the first two games, both teams will face off for a “rubber match” on Sunday afternoon. Let’s dive right into my favorite couple of plays in the final game of this series…

Washington Nationals vs. Oakland Athletics Prediction

MacKenzie Gore dominated the A’s for 11 strikeouts on Saturday. It will be Trevor Williams on the bump for the Nationals in Sunday afternoon’s matchup against Oakland. He’s pitched great in his first two starts, and many people are expecting him to deal once again versus a beatable A’s team on Sunday, but after the first two games of this series soared under the total in this one is moving up. Why would the total be on the move to o/u 8.5 if Williams was going to deal in this game?

The fact that the A’s are a (-140) favorite in this game tells me everything I need to know about how this game is going to play out. Alex Wood will be on the bump for the A’s on Sunday. He’s been hit-up pretty bad in his first three starts of the season, struggling with his command. We know the Nationals love facing left-handed pitching… isn’t it a little surprising to see the A’s catching nearly 20 cents of steam on the moneyline with Wood’s 8.03 ERA after getting held to one run on Saturday?

You won’t see the A’s as a betting favorite very often, but seeing them catch this much steam on the moneyline tells me they earn a series win against the Nationals on Sunday. Wood has struggled immensely this season, but in a game with the total moving up from o/u 7.5 to o/u 8.5 on some books, it doesn’t seem like we’re going to need masterclass from him for the Athletics to win this game. There will be plenty of runs in this contest, and by looking at the movement on the moneyline odds it seems like they will mainly be coming from the A’s.

Trevor Williams has pitched great in his two starts so far this season, but we know what type of pitcher he is at this point of his career. Sell-high on Williams after some solid starts and buy-low on Alex Wood and the A’s on Sunday. They win this game in an unexpected offensive shootout against the Nats.
