Cleveland Guardians VS. Los Angeles Angels PREDICTION

The Guardians are on a hot streak, winning six games in a row. Tonight, they send out Logan Allen to the mound as the starting pitcher. Logan Allen has a 5-2 record this season with an ERA of 4.91 and a whip of 1.44. Allen has struggled this season to get it going after debuting last year with an ERA of 3.81 across 24 starts as a rookie. However, Logan Allen is coming off back-to-back quality starts against the White Sox and Twins, posting 12 shut-out innings combined across the last two starts.

The Angels will counter by sending out left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval. Sandoval has also had a so–so season, posting a 4.59 ERA with a 2–6 record. Sandoval is coming off a quality start against the Rangers in which he gave up one earned run across six innings, which was a bounce back from his rough start against the Royals.

I expect the Angels to have a quick start to tonight‘s game against Logan Allen due to his underlying metrics. Allen already has a high ERA, but he has an expected batting average of .263 and an expected slugging rate of .447. He also only holds a 19.5% strikeout rate, which is relatively low for starting pitchers. He’s given up a hard-hit rate of 45% and has been allowing an average exit velocity of 91 mph. His underlying metrics are very poor for a pitcher who will also be facing a hot Angels lineup tonight.

The Angels have been one of the hottest teams against left-handed pitching over the last two weeks. They are fourth in batting average with an average of .299 and are second in OPS with a .887 OPS. The Angels have been crushing lefties and should continue to do so in their home stadium tonight. However, the Angels bullpen has been one of the worst in the MLB this season with an average ERA of 4.94. The Guardians, on the other hand, have had the lowest ERA for any bullpen in the MLB with an average ERA of 2.52. it is entirely possible that the Angels take an early lead in this game and blow it once the pitchers are out of the picture and we get to the bullpens. Because of that, I’m taking the Angels to win the first five innings tonight behind Patrick Sandoval.
