It’s tough to decide which young starter is going to out-duel the other on Friday night. MacKenzie Gore lowered his ERA to 3.30 in his last start. The left-hander has continued to impress in his second season with Washington. George Kirby, on the other hand, hasn’t had the breakout year that everyone expected before the season. He just got rocked by the Orioles in his last outing, allowing five runs on nine hits.
If you dive into Kirby’s 2024 stats, you’ll notice that he typically either throws a gem, or gets absolutely lit-up. There’s really no in between, as he’s only had one scenario of back-to-back poor outings this season. I’m willing to bet he follows up his dud of a start with a gem in DC on Friday night. The Nationals have struggled mightily offensively in recent weeks, especially at home. I’m not expecting much out of their offense while Kirby is on the bump.
It’s pretty clear at this point that I’m fading these offenses and targeting the under on the total, but let’s isolate the first half of this ballgame. I don’t want to deal with the Nationals bullpen at all tonight, as they’ve been struggling in recent games. Let’s target the F5 under in this game, which has been moving lower and lower all day.
