New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction: Can Griffin Canning, Angels Surprise Yankees Early?

The Yankees and Angels kick off a three series from Angel Stadium tonight in Los Angeles. The Yankees enter this game with the best record in the American League at 37-18. They’ve also done well on the road this year, as they are 19-10 away from Yankee Stadium. the Angels enter this game holding the second-worst record in the American League at 20-33. They are also just 6-19 at home, which is the worst in major league baseball. What should we expect in this series opener tonight?

New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction

The Yankees will send out Nestor Cortes to take the bump first tonight. Cortes is having an excellent year for the Yankees, as he is sporting a 3.29 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He is coming off back-to-back scoreless outings against the Mariners and White Sox, as he has posted 15 straight scoreless innings for the Yankees. However, one important thing to note for Nestor Cortes is that he has been dominant at home, but has struggled on the road this season. In six starts at home, he has a 1.12 and a 3-1 record. On the road, he is 0-3 in five starts with a 6.75 ERA. Starting for the Angels will be right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning. Canning is in his fifth season with the Angels and he struggled a bit out of the gate this year. He had a 7.13 ERA in April and had yet to go more than five innings in any start up until May. However, he has been hot in May, posting a 1.99 ERA across his four starts this month. Canning posted two quality starts this month and has not given up more than two earned runs in any start in May, despite going up against some tough offenses like the Astros and Guardians.

This matchup should actually favor the Angels tonight because they are facing a left-handed pitcher in Nestor Cortes. The Angels offense has been much better all season against left-handed pitching, as they lead the MLB in batting average against left-handed pitching at .277. They have been much more average against right-handed pitching, ranking 17th in batting average against righties.

Cortes has also struggled much more on the road, so this is somewhat of a perfect storm for the Angels in the series opener. Griffin Canning is pitching really well right now and has been on one of the best runs in his career in May.

The Yankees are heavily favored because they are one of the best teams in the American League and the Angels have one of the worst records in the American League, but this pitching matchup should favor the Angels in at least in the first five innings. Therefore, I’m taking the Angels at a discount on the first five spread to at least be tied here, if not taking the lead into the sixth.
